The University of Manchester’s Law School has continued its dedication to providing high quality legal education for over 140 years. Today, surveys confirm us as one of the UK’s leading law schools, with teaching rated as “excellent” in the latest Higher Education Funding Council for England and student satisfaction results consistently above 90%. As well as qualifying law degrees at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, we also offer courses in criminology, healthcare ethics, bioethics and medical law, making our range of specialisms one of the broadest in the country and the expertise of our staff sought after all over the world. International reputation

Many of our academics have research links with overseas organisations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organisation and a number of legal authorities and international law schools. Such a network means we can offer student exchange programmes with universities in Europe, USA, Australia and Singapore, enriching the student experience of those who study with us. Our School is also the UK member of the Consortium of European Law Schools which was awarded funding from the EU to establish a Europe-China School of Law (ECSL) in Beijing. The new School opened in 2008 and is the first of its kind, offering courses that span both Chinese and Western law and strengthening the education links between Manchester and one of today’s biggest global economies. We are held in high esteem by the legal profession and many leading solicitors provide us with sponsorship. This includes the funding of our Legal Advice Centre, which was opened in 2000 to provide our students with practical experience in pro bono legal work, and a free legal advice service to the local community.

🏆 Congratulations to Caroline Hoyle, winner of a 2026 Teaching Excellence Award!

Caroline has been recognised for her sustained and strategic leadership in developing academic advising across the School of Social Sciences — helping create a more personalised and consistent experience for students. 🎉

What began as a pilot in 2021 has grown into a permanent, blended model of academic advising. Caroline established and supported a team of 13 specialist School Academic Advisors, who provide tailored support to first-year students and have developed expertise to support a wider range of student needs.

Following positive evaluation, the model became permanent in 2024 and is now embedded across Social Sciences. It has improved communication and student engagement, while creating a more consistent and personalised advising experiece with inclusion, wellbeing and belonging at its heart. 💜

Reflecting on the award, Caroline said:
💬 “I'm delighted to receive this award for Educational Leadership. Supporting student success, wellbeing, and belonging has always been at the heart of my work. This recognition reflects a collective effort to strengthen academic advising in the School of Social Sciences and create a more personalised, inclusive and supportive experience for our students. I'm grateful to the colleagues and students who have helped shape this work”

Caroline’s work has also reached beyond the original project. She has supported around 240 academic advisors across Social Sciences, promoting a student-centred approach to advising, and is helping share this practice nationally through a new Special Interest Group with UKAT (UK Advising and Tutoring).

We’re delighted to announce that Professor Amir Paz-Fuchs has been appointed as the new Head of The University of Manchester Law School in the School of Social Sciences at The University of Manchester.

Currently Head of the Law School and Professor of Law and Social Justice at the University of Sussex, Amir will take up the role on 1 September 2026.

His teaching and research focus on labour and employment law, jurisprudence, social rights and social justice, and the legal aspects of privatisation. In 2014, he founded Sussex Clinical Legal Education and was Founding Director of the Law clinics until 2022.

My longstanding admiration for the University and affection for the city make this a particularly meaningful appointment for me. I’m delighted to have the opportunity to work with such talented and committed colleagues in Law, and across the School of Social Sciences and wider Faculty.”

Our staff Carolyn Abbot, Kirsty Keywood, Alex Mullock, Rachael Ntongho, Yenkong Ngangjoh Hodu, Geoff Pearson and Sarah Devaney had the privilege to join Lady Brenda Hale in conversation with Afua Hirsch for the IAWJ event in London yesterday: In the Company of Justice.
