The School of Ocean Sciences, one of the largest university Marine Science departments in Europe, a multi-disciplinary department located on the shores of the Menai Strait, North Wales, UK. Understanding the oceans constitutes a major challenge for modern science. Even after a hundred years of intense study, the oceans remain under-explored, and our knowledge of many of the key-processes occurring within them is fragmentary. At Bangor we are justly proud of our long-established tradition of excellence in research and teaching in marine science. The School of Ocean Science is a leading international research institution, and one of the largest teaching departments in Europe. We have well-resourced groups in the principal disciplines of biology, chemistry, geology and physics. However, our emphasis on multidisciplinary research effectively ensures ready access to expertise in all aspects of marine science.

The Challenger Society conference is the major UK Marine Science conference and takes place biennially. This year marks 42 years since the very first Challenger conference took place in Bangor and the 150th Anniversary of the return of the historic around the world Challenger cruise which, for many, marked the start of marine science research in the UK.

The conference heard world leading research outcomes including the role of the ocean in mediating our climate, impacts of renewable energy extraction on the ocean and on advances in ocean literacy. Alongside the conference programme, delegates enjoyed field experiences including a visit to Cwm Idwal, GeoMôn Unesco Global Geopark - Anglesey's geopark and an Anglesey Wildlife boat trip with Seacoast Safaris.

A special congratulations to Sijing, who received recognition for her conference poster, showcasing the high quality of research being undertaken at Bangor.

The conference also honoured the legacy of Professor Jack Darbyshire, one of the pioneers of modern oceanography in the UK and Bangor's first Professor of Physical Oceanography. Bangor University

We had a great turnout for the inaugural Jack Darbyshire Memorial Lecture where Prof. Iestyn Woolway from the School of Ocean Sciences discussed the future of inland waters and shared insights into his studies on global environmental change.
Alumnus and Bangor University Honorary Fellow Prof. Ed Hill, (MSc Physical Oceanography, 1983 and Physical Oceanography PhD, 1987) also spoke to share some of his memories of his time here as a student under Prof. Jack Darbyshire who was our first Professor of Physical Oceanography.
