Almost 40 years after they started at Northumbria, five friends were back on campus 🎓

Two Law grads. Three Engineering grads ✨

⚖️ The Law grads stepped into the Mock Court at Northumbria Law School

🛠️ The Engineering grads watched the 3D printers in action in Ellison Building

🍻 Then it was a catch-up in Habita at the Students' Union

Kevin, who graduated with a degree in Law in 1989 and who was Executive Dean of Northumbria's Newcastle Business School and School of Law between 2012 and 2016, said: "What a pleasure to meet former colleagues and lecturers and see the beautiful spaces across campus. We envy the students of today starting on their journey at uni and in life!" 💬

🏆 Small Business of the Year goes to a Northumbria graduate!

Last night at the North East Business Awards grand final, Hasan Hamid took the title for Burger-Drop 🍔 and he wasn't the only graduate in the spotlight.

Hasan (Newcastle Business School, class of 2018) launched his gourmet burger brand with a first restaurant on Westgate Road in Newcastle. It now operates seven UK locations and supports 58 jobs.

Husain Ayoob (BSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, class of 2024) founded Ayoob AI straight after graduating. After winning the Start-up Award at his sub-regional heat, he went on to the grand final as a finalist in the Rising Star category 🤖 His Newcastle-based company builds AI models from scratch for enterprise and government clients.

Luke Henderson (Newcastle Business School, class of 2025) was also shortlisted in the Rising Star category for NeuroMoney 💷 a fintech startup helping neurodivergent adults manage their money. He combined his business background, technical skills and lived experience of ADHD to create it while studying his undergraduate degree at Northumbria.

Student and graduate founders can access one-to-one advice, specialist advisors and co-working space through Northumbria's Incubator Hub.

Congratulations to Hasan, Husain and Luke on a standout night for Northumbria's graduate community 👏

What can an engineering education in the North East lead to?

For Mark Wild OBE FREng, it led to a 40-year career delivering some of the UK's most complex infrastructure programmes, including Crossrail and now HS2.

Mark grew up in the region and studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Northumbria. On Thursday 26 November, he returns to Newcastle for a public lecture, hosted in partnership with the Northumberland and Newcastle Society, to look back on the journey and share his thoughts on where UK engineering goes next.

Paul Wilkinson graduated from Northumbria University in 1998 and is now the Group Deputy Managing Director at Barbour

Last night’s exhibition, Tartan Reimagined: The Barbour Way, at London’s Saatchi Gallery

Barbour is a valued partner, supporting IMPACT+, Northumbria’s major research project measuring and assessing the fashion industry’s environmental impact, as well as the Barbour Foundation’s support of IntoUniversity Newcastle.
