Study identifies attitudes towards personal data processing for national security.

Almost 80% of UK adults support national security agencies collecting and processing personal data to investigate terrorism and serious crime, according to new research by the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) at The Alan Turing Institute, in collaboration with Savanta and Hopkins Van Mil, published on Tuesday.

Graduate and Professor at Northumbria University Law School, Professor Marion Oswald MBE, is a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Emerging Technology and Security (CETaS) and was a co-author on this study. Her research covers the interaction between law and digital technology, and has made distinctive contributions in respect of privacy, fair decision-making and artificial intelligence (AI) and the way that data is acted upon by the public sector, focusing on policing and national security.

On we celebrate our strategic new partnership with the International Centre for Life (Life) to boost science education and engagement across the North East.

The new agreement builds on 15 years of collaboration which has helped bridge the gap between academia and the community; engaging the region with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Academics from Northumbria will work with colleagues from Life on various research projects, including studies involving Centre visitors. Recently visitors had the chance to take part in research led by Northumbria academics which could protect astronauts from injury during future missions to the Moon. This aligns with our innovative new North East Space Skills and Technology (NESST) centre, a state of the art £50M facility developed by Northumbria, with investment from the UK Space Agency and the space and satellite division of industry giant Lockheed Martin.

A cafetière for loose-leaf tea, originally conceived by a group of MA Design and MA Fashion Design students at Northumbria University is landing on shelves across the world, in a fantastic turnaround from concept to product.

The product, that redefines how loose-leaf tea is brewed, is a blend of innovative design and everyday practicality and is now available worldwide created by students Shrey Trivedi, Lewis Kingsley, Adnan Sunny, and Kenny McRae, inspired by a live brief to design a kitchenware item for loose-leaf tea.

The teapot features a gentle spinning mechanism that releases the flavour of loose-leaf tea, offering a unique brewing experience. This project highlights the value of experiential learning, as Northumbria’s partnership with Lifetime Brands continues to provide students with real-world design opportunities.

On we celebrate the HAF Plus programme, a schedule of free and engaging activities for ages between 13-16 years old to support locals led by Professor Greta Defeyter, Director of the Healthy Living Lab at Northumbria University. Our Northumbria HAF+ Alumni Ambassadors are Northumbria University graduates who have supported the HAF+ programme and the University's ongoing work to deliver it alongside local authorities.

Adam Olaore highlighted that “HAF+ is a structure, a way to help build that foundation for the young to show them that they continue to have the support around them that they need”, with Joanna Lacey adding that the programme empowers young people with access to local opportunities, helping them develop independence and discover passions. Alosh K. Jose reflects on his own journey, with the programme allowing his organisation, Cricketqube, to have a positive impact on underprivileged youth.

Northumbria University graduate and founder of Ayoob AI, Husain Ayoob, is taking the AI industry by storm

While still studying, Husain participated in a six-month live project with Lockheed Martin, where he and his classmates developed AI-driven software to detect cybersecurity vulnerabilities. This experience, along with his consultancy background, inspired him to create his own company and through Northumbria Student & Graduate Enterprise team, Husain received the essential mentorship, business advice and support he needed to launch Ayoob AI - a company now serving clients across the globe.

Husain credits much of his success to the support he received through the University's Incubator Hub, which provided the mentorship and support he needed to scale Ayoob AI globally. His story serves as an inspiration for future entrepreneurs looking to turn their academic experiences into successful business ventures.

Northumbria University Fashion Graduate, David Yeung, is making waves in the fashion world by blending culture with a modern edge. His fashion creations interpret Chinese heritage through a global lens defined by the fusion of refined silhouettes, minimalist tailoring, and symbolic cultural elements, offering a fresh take on 'New Chinese Style'. Yeung’s work often incorporates heritage textiles like Xiangyunsha silk reimagined in contemporary forms, layering traditional craftsmanship with urban sophistication.

In a recent exclusive interview with China News Service, David discussed the growing global fascination with the 'New Chinese Style'. With global brands increasingly tapping into the richness of Chinese culture, he emphasises the importance of moving beyond symbols and toward a more meaningful expression of national identity in fashion.

David continues to inspire the next generation of designers, his journey is a testament to Northumbria University’s global impact and the power of fashion as a bridge between cultures, histories and futures.
