Welcome to the team Alun Armstrong
⚽️ Head of Elite and Performance Football

Alun is an English former professional footballer and manager, he recently managed Darlington. During his playing career, Armstrong operated primarily as a forward. His career as a player, which ran between 1993 and 2007, included spells at Newcastle United, Stockport County, Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town, two spells at Darlington, Rushden & Diamonds and concluding it with a brief spell at Newcastle Blue Star. He has also enjoyed loan spells at Huddersfield Town, Bradford City and Doncaster Rovers. Alun entered into club management in 2016, joining Blyth Spartans, achieving promotion to the National League North in his first season in charge. He left the club in 2019, agreeing to join Darlington as their new manager.

We would like to welcome our new full time 🏉 Rugby Coach

Michael Van Vuuren

Born in East London, South Africa, Michael was schooled at Grey High School in Port Elizabeth. He played in the Grey first team in 2008 and 2009. After school, he signed with Free State and, in 2011. He also represented the South African under-20 team at the Junior World Cup that year. In a professional career spanning more than 13 years, Michael has represented Stade Francais in the Top 14 and English club sides like Bath, Northampton, Wasps and most recently, Newcastle Falcons. Michael returned to South Africa, representing the Lions in the Currie Cup and URC. Whilst in Johannesburg, he was a coaching consultant for St Stithians College and throwing coach for the SA Schools captain, He is also currently the Head Coach at Alnwick RFC.

Best of luck to our DiSE Boxing coach Gavin Rickelton. This weekend Gavin is coaching with Team England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 in the first of four preparation camps with the Youth Performance Team. In August, Gavin will then be attending the Brandenburg Cup in Germany with Team England 🥊.

Congratulations to our Athletics Academy Head Coach Chris, who has made a return to track and field Athletics this summer, and cleaned up with 3 gold medals and a Championships record and the North East Championships last weekend.

Well done Chris 👏

Chris competed in the 400m, Long Jump, and Triple Jump.
Picking up 3 gold medals and setting a Championships record in the Triple Jump.

Our former Personal training student and now learning support officer, Keavy delivered an outstanding fitness class and lesson with the sport students today. She discussed opportunities in fitness and shared her journey in the fitness industry. Keavy also still works in the fitness industry and the students gained an insight into what it’s like to be a personal trainer. Great work! 💪🏻👟

As part of step up week we invited some local schools to take part in a range of practical activities and eSports at the amAcademy for Sport. It was a fun-filled event, with some excellent examples of hard-work and collaboration. Our students planned and delivered the event and all of the students had a fantastic time ⚽️🏓🎮📖

It’s been a busy weekend for our DiSE Boxing coach Gavin Rickelton. Gavin has been coaching with Team England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 at the Schools GB 3 Nations Tournament in Nottingham. Working with the future stars of England Boxing and the next generation of DiSE Boxing students 🥊.

Our Athletics coaches were pleased to work with pupils from St Wilfreds today.
We welcomed students who had gained selection to represent their school in Athletics, and offered some expert coaching and a strength and conditioning session.

The young Athletes took part in a detailed warm up, some mobility, running technique drills and some acceleration work. Followed by an event of their choice, including Long Jump, Javelin, High Jump, Sprints and a Speed Endurance session.
Next up the athletes worked in our s&c gym and learned some exercises to develop speed and power.

To add, the students were fantasic! Listened well, asked some great questions to learn more, and had a great time.

Well done to all who took part, and thank you to St Wilfreds for bringing a great bunch of athletes to work with us!
