As the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre celebrates 10 years of research and improving patient care, we're thrilled that a pioneering new drug for patients with muscular dystrophy has been approved for use in the NHS.

The centre, which is a partnership between Newcastle University and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, helped develop the medical breakthrough that will support people, like brothers Freddie and Louis from Gateshead, to enjoy a greater quality of life for longer.

Our Story

We can trace our origins to:

  • the School of Medicine and Surgery, established in 1834

  • Armstrong College, founded in 1871 for the teaching of physical sciences
  • These two colleges formed one division of the federal University of Durham. The Durham Colleges formed the other division.
