New publication now available in bookstores and online: “Constructing the new Italy. Myths of Rome and Fascism” edited by Fabrizio Oppedisano, Paola S. Salvatores and Newcastle's Federico Santangelo.
See: https://www.viella.it/libro/9791254694022

During the fascist twentieth century the myth of ancient Rome represented one of the most pervasive aspects of the regime’s ideology and propaganda: the calls to romance were ubiquitous, and they formed a mythopoetic engine of inexhaustible power.
After a historical turnaround that, starting above all from the nineties of the 20th century, has attributed a legitimate relevance to a topic that is no longer inescapable in the reconstruction of the political and cultural dynamics of fascism, this book collects the results of a collective reflection that involved contemporary historians and antiquists, archaeologists, historians of art and architecture. A new articulation emerges of the relationship between a plurality of myths of Rome and the totalitarian project of building the new fascist Italy.

Fabrizio Oppedisano teaches Roman History at the Super Normale School.
Paula S. Salvatori is a contemporary historian. He currently does research in Rome at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for History of Art.
Federico Santangelo teaches Ancient History at Newcastle University.
