We are a medium-sized School of Modern Languages located at the Old Library Building at the heart of the beautiful campus of Newcastle University. You can study Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese with us, as well as sample Catalan, Dutch and Italian. We are able to offer an unusually wide and exciting choice within a modern languages degree, with nearly half of our over 40 m

embers of staff from all over the world. While languages are the cornerstone of what we do and teach, we believe that it is crucial to also engage with the cultures associated with these languages. In an age of increasing globalization and internationalization, modern languages graduates with intercultural competence are needed. This means that our graduates enjoy good employability prospects.

The Chinese Independent Film Archive (CIFA) has put on an exhibition called ‘In Search of Lin Zhao’s Soul: Journey into a Hidden History’, inspired by the landmark Chinese independent documentary In Search of Lin Zhao’s Soul (Hu Jie, 2005). The exhibition is currently on display in the Beehive Space and consists of 16 woodcut prints, which have been donated to the CIFA, and accompanying poetry, all by Hu Jie. So come along to the Beehive Space in between your seminars to have a look at the exciting work on display!

As part of the Research Seminar Series for this semester, we will be welcoming Prof. Rachel Harris from SOAS, who was kindly invited to speak by our PGR students. So, come along this Wednesday 6th March to hear Rachel discuss Uyghur cultures in exile, which is fast being erased from their homeland and serves as a reminder of what is not being preserved under China's heritage initiatives.

The Language Resource Centre is a great place to study, but is particularly useful for SML students due to its ideal location within the Old Library Building and its access to self-study resources in over 100 languages. The LRC facilities are available free of charge to all Newcastle University staff and students who register so, if you're looking for a new study location that can help with your language learning, scan the QR code to register!

Today is Shrove Tuesday, the the final day of Carnival or the last day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday and, in the UK, we traditionally commemorate this day by eating pancakes. If so, join Newcastle University's Multilingual Choir, an acapella choir that sings songs in various languages! As part of the SML Decolonising Initiatives 2023-24, we have hosted a series of panels in which we discussed how governments and non-academic institutions have implemented policies and practices that promote diversity of cultural expressions, and facilitate communication.
The last event of the series will take place this afternoon at 4pm in OLB 2.29 and will focus on writing, translation, decoloniality and activism with participation from Dr Kavita Bhanot (University of Birmingham) and Professor Preti Taneja (Newcastle University). Swipe to find out more!
