School of Modern Languages - Newcastle University

School of Modern Languages - Newcastle University A multi-disciplinary school based in the North East of England teaching languages at UG and PG level. Study with us: https://www.ncl.ac.uk/sml/

We are a medium-sized School of Modern Languages located at the Old Library Building at the heart of the beautiful campus of Newcastle University. You can study Chinese, Japanese, French, German, Spanish and Portuguese with us, as well as sample Catalan, Dutch and Italian. We are able to offer an unusually wide and exciting choice within a modern languages degree, with nearly half of our over 40 m

embers of staff from all over the world. While languages are the cornerstone of what we do and teach, we believe that it is crucial to also engage with the cultures associated with these languages. In an age of increasing globalization and internationalization, modern languages graduates with intercultural competence are needed. This means that our graduates enjoy good employability prospects.

Thriving Japanese Studies!

• Jessie Baker presented as a finalist at the national Japanese Speech Contest.

• Following Dr Yoshioka’s talk on sumo, The Japan Film Festival screening of SUMODO – The Successors of Samurai (2020), co‑hosted with the Consulate of Japan in Edinburgh, was a great success with a full audience.

• Our long‑running Japanese outreach project led by Kumi Casey has been awarded a £6,860 grant by the Japan Foundation for 2026/27.

Japanese Studies continues to thrive!

We were delighted to welcome local secondary and sixth-form pupils to Newcastle University for our Documentary Cultural Day on 25th March, hosted by CIFA and the School of Modern Languages 🎬

Through a series of short films, students explored Chinese culture, shared their perspectives, and challenged common stereotypes. A highlight of the day was hearing from one of our own students about his inspiring Chinese learning journey.

🙌 90% of pupils said they’d love to watch more films like these—showing the power of film in bringing cultures to life!
