Huge congratulations to our Business and Law graduate Jenny McFadden and her sister Alex on getting a deal in the den for their maternity clothing company Pretty Mama! If you missed the episode then watch the recap below!

Pretty Mama also received business support and advice from Northumbria’s Student and Graduate Enterprise team at Northumbria University Graduate Futures. Jenny believes this, coupled with the University’s clear focus on entrepreneurial teaching, were key factors in Pretty Mama’s early success and in its continuing growth. She said: “Starting any new business can be a scary process but we knew we had hit on a great idea and that there was a ready market out there for our products. Having the backing, support and knowledge of the business enterprise team at Northumbria was incredibly useful and gave us the confidence to put our entrepreneurship to the test.

Happy ! Our amazing Northumbria University have produced this montage of their reflections. We are so proud of them! Thanks to Dr Juliet Kele and Dr Steff Worst for the inspiration

Public Lecture 'The Antidote to Black Swans' next week on Monday 14th October with speaker John Mark Williams, CEO at Agile Business Consortium - also one of our own graduates, with an MBA in Business Studies.

Lecture synopsis: Calamitous events, alarmingly, have a habit of being unexpected. Financial crashes, natural disasters, infectious diseases, the failure of household names from the High Street – all seem to take us unawares and leave us scrambling to catch up with the pace of collapse. Yet, whilst we cannot see the future, we can prepare for it. John Williams looks at the sudden, unexpected, and sometimes ruinous situations that we call, metaphorically, ‘Black Swans’, and how their impact can be lessened, or even exploited for good.

Student entrepreneur launches business with social mission

A student at Northumbria University has launched his first business with a social mission to help raise awareness of ocean pollution and save marine life.

Nathan Smith, 21 from York, is a second year student on the Entrepreneurial Business Management (EBM) programme at Newcastle Business School.

Following a trip to Thailand last summer, he was struck by the level of rubbish and plastics littering beautiful beaches and wondered how he could encourage people to clean up and raise awareness of ocean pollution.

In response, he’s set up OceanJunkie, a social enterprise which recycles discarded fishing nets into bracelets. The money raised from bracelet sales is then reinvested to help organise and fund community beach clean ups along the North East Coast in a bid to reduce ocean pollution and encourage conservation activities.
