🏆 Graduate entrepreneurs from Northumbria are celebrating after winning recognition at the grand final of the East Business Awards 2026.

Congratulations to Hasan Hamid, founder of gourmet burger brand Burger Drop, and Husain Ayoob, founder and CEO of AI solutions company Ayoob AI, who each won their categories at sub-regional heats of the prestigious annual awards.

Last night, they went head-to-head with other sub-regional winners for the overall North East titles at a glittering grand final dinner.

Hasan was named a finalist in the coveted Small Business of the Year category and went on to win the overall title in the grand final.

Husain was named a finalist in both the Rising Star and Start-up Award categories.

Both businessmen credited the support they have received from Northumbria’s student and graduate enterprise team and access to the Incubator Hub as being instrumental in helping to bring their ideas to life.

Freshers week is almost here and while it's a very exciting time it's also important to stay safe. Here are some tips for you and your friends...

📍Before you head out
- Write down your address in case you forget it
- Always plan how you are getting home from a night out or social event
- Find a reputable taxi company in advance*

🍺 Keep your drink safe
- Don’t leave it unattended
- Use drink toppers when you can
- If it tastes/looks odd, don’t drink it

👀 Spotting signs of drink spiking
- Sudden dizziness and confusion
- Loss of balance
- Feeling very sleepy or unwell
- If you or a friend feel this way, get help immediately.

♥️ Look after yourself
-Freshers Flu is very common, be sure to keep yourself well rested, hydrated and nourished
-if you are under 25 and starting university, or moving into halls of residence for the first time this autumn you might be eligible for a MenB vaccine. Find out more and book at nhs.uk/book-menb

👭Look after each other
- Try and stay in groups of 3 or more
- Don’t feel pressured to say ‘yes’ to anything
- Be mindful about sharing personal info

Today Professor Greta Defeyter OBE, Director of the Healthy Living Lab and Dean of Social Mobility Policy Engagement at Northumbria, joined a coalition of nearly 60 cross-party parliamentarians, charity leaders and campaigners to deliver an urgent letter to 10 Downing Street, calling on the Government to reverse a decision that would sever the long-standing link between free school meal entitlement and the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme.

Led by the Alliance 4 Children, Feeding Britain and our Healthy Living Lab, the coalition is responding to Government plans to extend free school meal eligibility to all families receiving Universal Credit from this month, bringing an additional 500,000 children into the scheme.

While welcoming the expansion, the coalition warns that these newly eligible children will not automatically qualify for HAF support during the school holidays, creating what it describes as an unjust two-tier system in which a child's need for a nutritious meal is recognised in term time but ignored the moment school breaks up.

🗣️ Professor Defeyter said: "Having accepted the need for this group of children and young people to receive help in term time, why deny that same need exists in the holidays?”
