Two Northumbria biomedical sciences researchers have been awarded grants to further their innovative work by the Academy of Medical Sciences.
Congratulations to Dr Emily Hume and Dr Monika Winter who are among 62 researchers from across the UK chosen to receive funding from the Academyโs Springboard programme in recognition of their pioneering approaches to improve human health and wellbeing.
Working with colleagues from Northumbria and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Hume will use the funding to investigate the development of a digital solution to support patients on the waiting list for lung transplant.
The funding awarded to Dr Winter will allow her to work with colleagues at Northumbria, the University of Colorado Denver and Newcastle University to support the development of better models to study rare mitochondrial diseases that can lead to serious issues like, seizures, developmental delays and muscle weakness.
