BREAKING NEWS: We’re excited to announce that Northumbria University has been named Modern University of the Year by The Times and The Sunday Times Good University Guide! 🥳

Northumbria has had an impressive and sustained run of national recognition in the last few years, including being named University of the Year in 2022 by Times Higher Education and winning both the Research University of the Year and Modern University of the Year titles in the 2023 Daily Mail University Guide.

This latest award of Modern University of the Year in the prestigious Good University Guide is in recognition of Northumbria’s performance in their research quality index, increasing student satisfaction and the University’s overall rise in the table – Northumbria is ranked 43rd overall in the Good University Guide 2025, an improvement of six places from last year – as well as its leading work to improve social mobility and create opportunities in the North East.

Professor Andy Long, Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive, said: “Northumbria’s achievements in recent years have been truly remarkable and this award marks another exciting chapter in our success story.”

An unseen self-portrait of one of the most popular northern English artists of his generation has been discovered hidden on the back of another painting.

Northumbria University have recently loaned 14 works from the Northumbria Collection to The Bowes Museum for the exhibition, making Northumbria the largest lender to the exhibition.

The exhibition has over 50 paintings, sketches and drawings by two of the greatest Northern artists of the 20th century, Norman Cornish and L S Lowry.

One of the many highlights includes a newly discovered self-portrait of Norman Cornish, which was uncovered at the Museum during conservation work ahead of the landmark show opening. This is a fascinating display by two extraordinary storytellers of everyday life in the north, seen from different perspectives.

Some useful guidance from Northumbria Police for getting the latest information about what's happening in the city over the weekend👇

09/08/2024

Key Metro travel info for customers using the network on Saturday 10 August:

We will be running a full service to all destinations on Saturday, 10 August.

Monument Metro station will be closed from the start of service on Saturday as a precaution, but we expect we will re-open it later in the day with the agreement of the police.

Closing selected city centre stations is something we’ve done in the recent past for events including the Great North Run, Sam Fender concerts and Champions League football games. It’s a sensible way to manage crowds when there is a lot going on in the city to keep things running smoothly for customers. There are always alternative stations within walking distance.

Our partners in the bus industry are also providing a full service into and across the city centre, with some local diversions in place due to road closures.

Our Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) programme, provides you with the opportunity to build on existing nursing knowledge and practice, allowing registered nurses to become more specialised and pursue a career as a health visitor or school nurse.

This year, previous Northumbria University Degree Apprenticeship student and health visitor, Rachel Henshall, was awarded a Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) award, recognising her outstanding performance while completing our programme.

Rachel stated “The SCPHN course was a tough 18-month apprenticeship but worth it to be where I am now. The lecturers were always available and really supportive and the small group I trained with all supported each other throughout university and practice placements.”

We offer a wide range of similar Higher and Degree Apprenticeships at Northumbria, along with a variety of sector specific courses to help you upskill and reach new levels in your career.
