Two Northumbria biomedical sciences researchers have been awarded grants to further their innovative work by the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Congratulations to Dr Emily Hume and Dr Monika Winter who are among 62 researchers from across the UK chosen to receive funding from the Academyโ€™s Springboard programme in recognition of their pioneering approaches to improve human health and wellbeing.

Working with colleagues from Northumbria and The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Hume will use the funding to investigate the development of a digital solution to support patients on the waiting list for lung transplant.

The funding awarded to Dr Winter will allow her to work with colleagues at Northumbria, the University of Colorado Denver and Newcastle University to support the development of better models to study rare mitochondrial diseases that can lead to serious issues like, seizures, developmental delays and muscle weakness.

A new study has revealed that one of the driest areas on Earth โ€“ the Saharo-Arabian Desert โ€“ enjoyed periods of green, humid weather over the last 8 million years.

The findings, which are published in Nature today, offer a groundbreaking insight into the hydroclimate of this now dry, arid region.

While previous studies suggested that this arid landscape had been in place for at least 11 million years, the new evidence challenges this notion, showing that Arabia was a much wetter place during certain periods in history.

These wetter conditions would have enabled the movement of mammals and other species, which relied on water sources for survival.

Dr Monika Markowska from Northumbria University is the lead author on the study.

A book written by two women, born 60 years apart, who never met, has been published, more than 30 years after work on it first began.

'Deserted Wives and Economic Divorce in 19th Century England and Wales: For Wives Alone', highlights a little-known Victorian legislative clause which restored the financial and legal independence of married women whose husbands had left them.

The book was started in the early 1990s by historian Professor Olive Anderson, but she sadly died in 2015 before completing it.

Northumbria University academic Dr Jennifer Aston came across the forgotten manuscript while carrying out research into the history of divorce and with the support of Oliveโ€™s two daughters has now completed the book their mother started 30 years before.

The religious festival Eid al-Fitr, or the โ€œFestival of Breaking the Fast,โ€ is one of two major holidays celebrated by Muslims around the world. Also known as the โ€œLesser Eid,โ€ Eid al-Fitr commemorates the end of the fasting month of Ramadan. An occasion for special prayers, family visits, gift-giving and charity, it takes place over one to three days, beginning on the first day of Shawwal.

โฐ As households in the UK prepare to move clocks forward by one hour this Sunday, did you know a Northumbria Professor has supported calls from the British Sleep Society to abolish the twice-yearly clock changes?

Evidence reviewed by the Society shows the changes of clock time to Daylight Saving Time (DST) in late March, more widely known as British Summer Time (BST), can interfere negatively with sleep regulation.

Malcolm von Schantz, Professor of Chronobiology at Northumbria University and a member of the Northumbria Centre for Sleep Research, explains more in the latest edition of Northumbria University News.
