Newcastle University Caledonian Society Newcastle University Reeling involving a winter ball, summer ball, regular socials and shenanigans! We hold meetings every week.

Newcastle University Caledonian Society is a society that teaches Scottish Dancing, known as Reeling, and hosts a Christmas party, an Easter ball and a Summer Ball. We welcome anyone, from those who are keen reelers to complete novices. It is a great opportunity for those who have never done it before to learn and try out some reels. There will be lots of old hands coming along to these practices to show the way and teach the dances.

Introducing our President - Cloudy!

Actually seeing Cloudy on a night out is as rare as a practice session with enough boys. However if she is there you are in luck, because after 1 drink she looses all impulse control on Apple Pay.

Cloudy’s strengths include Irish exiting, match-making and being paediatric first aid certified. This means the society is prepared to welcome any club babies or 17-year-old Scottish students.

Like Biddulph, Cloudy will also be on committee for the Shooting Club this year. Her reeling is so enthusiastic we are unsure if she’ll hit more clays there or people in practice sessions.

Despite having minimal familial connections to Scotland, Cloudy is actually part of a clan - the Autism Acceptance Clan ( ) She’s so on the spectrum we’re surprised she isn’t clan chief…

With a promotion from Social Sec(xy) and an attendance record of 20 reeling balls last year alone, the club is in good hands this year - now bring on September!

Introducing our VP - Rosie

After a successful year as Welfare Officer, Rosie has been promoted to VP. In Rosie’s eyes, this involved adding another layer of fake tan.

Strengths include love of a night out, social skills, ability to hold eye contact- basically everything your new Pres lacks. Weaknesses revolve around Aperol, height and natural blondness.

Rosie will remind you that she is 50% Ulster Scot; in our eyes that makes her 25% Scot, 75% not, but given she lives in Yorkshire, we’d argue she’s Northern enough for it not to matter anyway.

Rosie’s love of shopping will come in handy, and we are sure she’ll excel at designing (and more importantly buying) this year’s merch.

Never seen without something orange (whether that be an Aperol or her hands), we couldn’t ask for anyone better to provide the energy and help lead Calsoc this year!

Introducing our Treasurer - Alex

More fondly known as Baby Biddulph, Alex is shadowed by his older brother Big Biddulph. An easy way to tell them apart is to dance with them - if you end up where you’re meant to be, then rest assured you are not dancing with Alex.

Biddulph provides almost all of the committee’s pint-chopping ability. That being said, we hope he manages to make it to our Thursday practice sessions after Wednesdays as the Shooting Club’s Social Sec (traitor).

Alex is known for his stingy nature. We are convinced the only reason he applied was to get the free committee ball tickets. As our treasurer, we’d say it’s a great quality to have, but his girlfriend might disagree.

Rarely seen out of black tie and rarer yet - out of Schöffel - there is no man better suited to look after all our cash this year. Here’s to hoping we don’t go bankrupt…

Introducing our Secretary- Georgia

This year we have the wonderful Georgia as our secretary. Given that Georgia spends 100% of her time at the pub, you might as well email Soho Jesmond if you’re trying to contact the society this year. In fact, if it was up to Georgia, our practice sessions would probably take place in the pub.

Georgia is single-handedly keeping her degree course ‘environmental science’ in business due to her levels of cigarette consumption. That or the fact she LIVES IN DUBAI. What she lacks in Scottishness she makes up for in noise - you tend to hear her before you see her.

Lecture attendance: minimal. Spelling ability: minimal. WhatsApp reply time: minimal. Just what you need in a good secretary. We are lucky to have someone so organised and enthusiastic about reeling on the committee this coming year.

Introducing our Social Sec - George

Despite an almost perfect attendance record at practice sessions, George still seems unsure of how to reel. The only dance he’s really got down is Hamilton House. He tries to flirt, and the women divert.

George has some big shoes to fill after Cloudy’s social media skills last year. Unfortunately, he hasn’t grown tall enough to fit into them, but here’s to hoping he’s a late bloomer.

Strengths include: provision of ci******es to those senior to him, provision of red pints to those senior to him and probably provision of most things to suck up to those senior to him. George also makes a beautiful woman- so expect at least one Gender Bender next year.

There is no doubt we will have a great year with George taking centre stage in all things social; we couldn’t ask for anyone better to get silly with.

Introducing your Welfare Officer for the coming year - Bamber!

Bamber’s strengths include actually being Scottish, Acapella skills (wish I was joking) and his ability to be almost permanently on a night out.

Despite being on a music degree, Bamber’s musical abilities fall short when it comes to the bagpipes. After 2 false starts at Piper’s & Pimms he had a note accuracy rate of under 50%, somehow making the bagpipes sound even worse than usual.

Freshers beware, Bamber not only loves a night out, but also Park View - making him the perfect choice for the Welfare Officer role.

Jokes aside, we are lucky to have such a kind and helpful person as our Welfare Officer and don’t hesitate to reach out to him for any reason. ⭐️
