What will health look like in the decades ahead? 🤔

We're excited to announce that Professor Sir Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, will be coming to Newcastle University next month to help us answer this question and kickstart the 26/27 NCL in Action series!

On Friday 16 October, Sir Chris will deliver a keynote address for our alumni and student community examining how health has changed dramatically over the past 150 years and what the next chapter could hold.

From longer life expectancy and changing patterns of disease to the challenges created by demographic, technological and societal change, his talk will offer fascinating insights into the opportunities and difficult choices that lie ahead.

Whether you spent your student days at Newcastle Medical School or simply have an interest in the issues that affect us all as we grow older, this promises to be a thought-provoking series exploring wellness in a new world order.

Two weeks today, an impressive bunch of Newcastle University alumni, colleagues and friends will be crossing the start-line of the Great North Run! 🏃

25 Team Newcastle runners are taking on the world's biggest and best half-marathon for a very important cause: they're raising money for students on campus to ensure everyone gets the full university experience 💙

In just the past two years, alumni runners have raised over £25,000 to support students facing financial pressures and barriers to opportunity. From access scholarships and hardship funding to discounted meals on campus, course materials and essential equipment, the funds raised help ensure that every student has the chance to succeed and thrive, regardless of their background.

If you've been in Newcastle city centre recently, chances are you'll have "thumped" into one of the 96 Peter Rabbit sculptures taking over the Toon! 🐰

We were very "hoppy" to see Newcastle University alumni artist featured in this year's trail, with Class of 2007 graduate Joseph Mulroy creating two of the beautiful bunnies found on the Quayside: Tyne-tastic Peter and Penny Hopper 👏

Having studied to become a doctor on campus, today Joseph (aka Arty Joe) is a GP and professional landscape artist based in Whitley Bay 🎨

The Tales on the Tyne art trail in support of St Oswald's Hospice will be available until 14 September 2026. They're "hare" for a short time only, so why not use this Bank Holiday weekend to visit the trail before it's too late? 😉

This International Dog Day 🐶 we'd like to introduce you to Class of 1991 alumna Deana Luchia 👋

Former Henderson Hall resident Deana is today a journalist and author of 'The Year of the Dog: 365 Fun Activities to do With Your Dog'. The book came out earlier this year, and was inspired by Deana's two rescue dogs! ❤️

💬 She told us:

" I wanted to find fun activities for dogs of all ages, personalities and breeds, particularly as my two little rescue dogs are not very keen on walks, swimming or chasing balls - all the things we normally think all dogs love.

"So I set myself a challenge to come up with 365 different activities to make every kind of dog happy. There are games, sports, recipes, unusual activities like dog cinema days and doggy afternoon teas, as well as interesting ideas for different kinds of walks, day trips and holidays.

"I hope my new book helps dog lovers make their dogs happy all 365 days of the year!"

Looking back on your time at Newcastle... what memory stands out most? 🤔

For Nikita Bazko (BA Business Management, 2011), it was the collaborative spirit of the Newcastle community. From lectures and seminars to late-night assignment prep, there was always a culture of students supporting one another, sharing ideas and helping each other succeed.

A highlight of Nikita's time at university was spending a placement year in Barcelona, an experience that broadened his horizons, built his confidence and introduced him to new perspectives on business and economics.

Looking back, Nikita credits Newcastle University not only with providing a great education, but also with fostering the curiosity, friendships and global outlook that have stayed with him throughout his career.

💬 He told us: "The atmosphere encouraged teamwork and mutual growth, which helped build both confidence and lasting friendships."

Having graduated from Newcastle Medical School last month, it's heartwarming to see the Class of 2026 beginning their medical careers right here in our region!

22 Newcastle University graduates have recently joined South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, where they'll spend the next two years on a programme of placements with the Trust's medicine, surgery and community services before moving on to their chosen specialism.

🗨️ Among the new starters is new graduate Francis from St Albans in Hertfordshire. He said:

“I wanted to stay in the North East to train and I’d been here as a medical student, so I already know the Trust. One of the attractions of being in the North East is access to the great coastline and the National Park in Northumberland, there’s so much to do.

“I’m looking forward to using what I’ve learned in medical school, being part of the team and helping the people from Sunderland and South Tyneside."

Who recognises this location on campus? 🤔

The Physics Building of King's College opened in 1962, the year before we officially became Newcastle University!

Today, it is known as the Herschel Building, after our first Professor of Physics - Alexander Stewart Herschel (1836-1907) - and is home to the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics. It's also where we hold our INSIGHTS public lecture series 💭

We were thrilled to see Class of 1979 Newcastle University alumna Professor Dame Pamela Shaw interviewed on BBC's Desert Island Discs recently! 🎧

Having studied medicine on campus and started her clinical training in the North East, today Pamela is a globally renowned neurologist and leading figure in tackling Motor Neurone Disease (MND).
