TYNE BRIDGE CLOSED SUNDAY 25th OCTOBER, WEDNESDAY 28th AND SUNDAY 1st NOVEMBER 2026.
We're sharing this here for anyone who will be travelling into Newcastle for our Midweek Event on Wednesday 28th October and / or our Sunday gatherings on Sunday 25th October and 1st November. The Tyne Bridge will be completely closed. If you are driving in you will need to use the A19 Tyne Tunnel or the Redheugh Bridge, and allow some extra time in case of congestion. Our next Sunday gathering will be at 11am on Sunday 11th October, it will be led by Kainara on 'Yoga and Contentment'. Kainara Motta says:

“'Contentment is not having everything we want, but discovering the fullness of what is already here.'
You are warmly invited to join us this Sunday for a meditation on contentment - 'Santosha', one of the guiding principles of yoga philosophy. Together, we will pause, turn inward, and explore the quiet joy of accepting and appreciating this moment just as it is. Let us gently release the habit of seeking happiness outside ourselves and listen instead for the peace that arises when we meet life with acceptance, gratitude, and an open heart.
May we discover that enough is already here, and that within stillness, there is a deep well of peace.”

Travel: There are no events in Newcastle City Centre this weekend, there are some roadworks in the city centre.
All are welcome on Sunday morning, join us in the Large Spiritual Commons Room at Northumbria Student Central. Student Central is the large brick building which houses the University's Library, opposite Newcastle Civic Centre. You can park in the car parks nearby (Blue Badge parking is available), bikes can be locked up just outside the building, and it is near the Haymarket Metro station, also the bus stops outside the Civic Centre. Please come to the side door with the banner, and we will have someone there to let you in! Part of our history! We inherited ten Victorian 'lectern Bibles'. These are very large illustrated Bibles intended to be left permanently out on a lectern both for reference and for reading during services. Many would have been from North East Unitarian congregations that have since closed. We have donated them to Rev. Jo James at Bradford Unitarians for a art project he is working on - we'll keep everyone posted.

We meet fortnightly on Wednesdays at ReCoCo from 5:45 - 7pm for our event ‘Something To Think About’. It’s a relaxed spiritual gathering, where we explore a different theme each session through music, poetry, guided discussion and meditation.

From The Unitarians' communications advisor, Pamela Welsh, please do have a read - and a listen: "Up and at it early this sunny Sunday morning to support the brilliant Friends of Friendless Churches's matchfunding campaign, by talking about it on BBC Radio Lincolnshire and BBC Radio Humberside. We're trying to save St Helen's in Biscathorpe, a gorgeous Victorian church with huge historic significance. Its walls are literally crumbling, as you can see from this picture. We're running a match-funding campaign - we want to raise £500,000 to save two historic churches this year. An anonymous donor will match what we raise." (Picture shows St Helen's church.)

Would you like to see inside our old home, the Church of the Divine Unity, before it reopens as a lecture theatre for Northumbria University? If so, please join us there just before 11am for our Fellowship Service, led by Chris Carr. Traditionally, the Fellowship Service is held on the Sunday nearest the fifth of October, because 5th October 1919 was the start of the long ministry at Newcastle upon Tyne Unitarians by Rev. Herbert Barnes, under whose guidance the Church of the Divine Unity was completed in 1939. Plans for the day are:
* 11am: Tour around the building
* 11.30am: Short Fellowship service within it, led by Chris Carr - in-person only, although we will record it.

Newcastle Unitarians are part of the national UK Unitarian movement. One of our societies is the National Unitarian Fellowship, which works to bring together Unitarians across the UK, particularly those who don't live near a congregation or fellowship, and also hosts annual events. Here's the details of their latest, this Saturday. If you'd like to go, the deadline has officially passed, but you can drop the organisers a line to let them know you're interested - and the Northern Unitarian Association can provide some financial support to get there (post below to let us know if you'd like to ask about that).
