Last Friday, UEA's School of Global Development UEA DEV hosted the 2026 DEV Innovation Summit. This was a student-led space to discuss and reflect on the growing role of AI through a Global Development lens.
The day opened with a student panel led by Ruth Mpinganjira, bringing together Ruby-May Elger, Kazuki Fujiwara and Deo Ochieng to share their experiences with AI — exploring what's becoming critical in the field and how we can navigate both its opportunities and challenges.
Loksan Harley and Kit Powney followed with grounded, real-world examples of AI in the development sector, including an honest look at the backlash and ethical considerations the field must face. This set the stage for Dr Emil Dauncey to lead a workshop on the relationship we build with AI in our professional lives — a timely and thought-provoking session.
The summit closed on a strong note with Deborah Adesina and David Girling presenting their research on the use of generative images in development organisations' communications — a fitting and forward-looking end to a rich agenda.
A special thank you to Belindar Kwamboka and Ruth Mpinganjira for co-organising such a thoughtful and impactful event. This summit is a testament to what student-driven initiatives can achieve. 👏
We leave with new reflections, fresh perspectives, and a lot to think about.
