We’re delighted to share the news that University of East Anglia has received an extraordinary £91.2 million philanthropic donation from Lord David Sainsbury, through his Gatsby Charitable Foundation, to revitalise the Sainsbury Centre for future generations.

Since opening in 1978, the Sainsbury Centre has brought art, people, research and learning together in one of the UK’s most distinctive cultural spaces. Designed by Lord Norman Foster and home to a world-class collection, it continues to inspire students, researchers, visitors and communities.

This once-in-a-lifetime gift will help protect the legacy of this Grade II* listed architectural icon, while supporting its future as a place where people can encounter art in new and meaningful ways.

The revitalisation will enhance the visitor experience, improve energy efficiency and make an important contribution to UEA’s commitment to a net zero campus by 2045.

As the Sainsbury Centre approaches its 50th anniversary, this generous support will help ensure that one of the jewels in the crown of our Norwich campus continues to inspire generations to come.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this possible 👏

Operating Department Practitioner Degree Apprenticeship

Operating Department Practitioners (ODPs) are an important part of the operating department team working with anaesthetists, surgeons, theatre nurses and other healthcare professionals to help ensure every operation is as safe and effective as possible. Taught primarily online by the School of Health Sciences at the University of East Anglia (UEA), our three-year course is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and leads to eligibility for registration as an ODP.

Action for all of us.

We've come a long way and together we can make sure we don't risk going backwards on mental health.

We need policy makers to prioritise the nation's mental health and take action to address the root causes of mental ill health, so that we can stay well.

🎉 We’re incredibly proud to share some great news! 🎉

The School of Health Sciences has been named School of the Year at the University of East Anglia (UEA) Students’ Union Transforming Education Awards (TEAs).

What makes this award extra special is that it’s led by student nominations and feedback. Our students highlighted the strong sense of community in the School and the way staff and students work together to make positive change happen.

This recognition belongs to everyone who makes the School what it is — our students, academic and professional services staff, and our brilliant placement partners. Your commitment, care, and teamwork make the School of Health Sciences such a supportive and inspiring place to study and work.

We’re also thrilled to celebrate individual successes at this year’s TEAs:
👏 Lauren Flannery, winner of the Sir Geoffrey and Lady Allen Prize for Excellence in Teaching
👏 Kerry Micklewright, winner of the Outstanding Postgraduate Teacher Award

To be recognised by the students we learn with and support every day is a real privilege. Thank you for being part of our community — and congratulations to all nominees and winners celebrated at this year’s TEAs. 💙

Great News for Nature Lovers and Our Local Community

We’re excited to share that the much‑loved boardwalk along the Yare Valley at UEA is officially getting a full restoration thanks to sponsorship from Norwich City Council, funding from the Greater Norwich Growth Board’s Infrastructure Investment Fund and fantastic support from local partners and community groups.

The boardwalk has been closed since early 2024, and has been much missed by walkers, commuters, families, students, staff, and so many who use the route to connect with nature and travel safely between Eaton, Cringleford, UEA, NNUH and Earlham Park.

Now, a brand‑new 400m accessible, sustainable and wildlife‑friendly walkway is on the way.

What to expect:
✅ A wider, safer path with new seating
✅ A durable recycled‑composite structure designed to last up to 25 years
✅ Improved habitats and a reshaped pond
✅ New educational dipping platform
✅ Better signage celebrating the valley’s incredible wildlife

This project has been shaped by local insight from the Yare Valley Society, Eaton Village Residents’ Association and many others who care deeply about this beautiful space.

Construction will begin in autumn 2026, timed to protect nesting wildlife.

A huge thank you to our funders, partners and everyone who donated or shared their ideas - this has truly been a community effort.
