As a videographer, I spend most of my time in my office editing, it's not always driving to exotic places like Stockport and filming on big building sites.

When us videographers are called out of their caves, we're in our element!

If I'm editing the project, I shoot more than I need to and turn office meeting rooms into makeshift film sets.
That's why I ditched the big camera rig for a tiny (yet sadly more expensive) setup!
It's a lot of grab and go and lots of getting creative on the spot. I absolutely love it.

A note to clients, friends, both:
Please remind me to get my phone out more on shoots...
I want to make more little videos like these and tag you in them!
I'm always too focussed on the filming to remember!

Love a good storyboard but..
I really love shooting with just an idea, a place, a time and a lot of creative freedom.

This photo is from when my friend Brady and I travelled up to St Andrews last year to film some special golf bags by Vessel, in partnership with The Open.

We had plenty of time before the shoot to film in Scotland. The result was some really delicious looking videos that sold the lifestyle and dream of playing golf at a special place like St Andrews.

We might have not experimented so much and got creative if we had to sign off the idea of every shot.

This is what I think about most on a video shoot with no storyboard:

- Time to film and thinking “have we got enough”
- Making sure everyone in front of camera feels comfortable. ‼️
- Am I on the same page as the client?
- Have we got a coherent story? Will the audience enjoy this?
- What shots can we get that will break corporate video conventions?
- is everything in focus? Can they use this footage for other videos?
- Is this shot useful for landscape and portrait?
- What gear I’m using and when…

Whether a videographer is setting up handheld for the golf field, or rigging it up like the BBC for an interview shot (both me), it’s the knowledge and experience that matters - not the kit!

I guess this is a message to all the 20 year old video creators out there looking up what lens to splash the cash on. I was a camera geek in this situation - but it doesn’t get you more opportunities! You do!

Nine years ago I reached 100,000 views on a YouTube video for the first time.
Back then, it was huge!

I've been making videos since I was 10 years old (I can prove it if you want to see some embarrassing skits).

In December, I shot an ad campaign for Stonehouse that has reached nearly a million views on Instagram alone.

I love my job - because it's not really my job! I'd do it regardless.

This is just a post to say do what you love, it's so worth it.

You might have caught my little appearance on BBC East Midlands today at lunch (also at 6:30pm tonight)!

We are making a documentary with The Pythian Club on one of the U.K’s fastest rising genres.

Drill music.

Should it be linked it to violence?
Or is it another art form for artists to express themselves and tell their story?
