Congratulations to Antonio Palinczuk, an Apprentice Biomedical Scientist at Nottingham University Hospitals, winner of the
Outstanding Apprentice of the Year: Health, Education and Care Award at last week’s Nottingham Trent University Apprenticeship Awards.

The NTU Apprenticeship Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements of NTU apprentices, employers and apprentice mentors. Antonio won the award for demonstrating exceptional resilience, academic excellence and a deep commitment to supporting others. He has made a significant impact across both his workplace and wider learning community.

Earlier diagnosis and treatment of liver disease “should be a priority” say Nottingham researchers

Earlier diagnosis to identify patients at risk from liver disease is needed, according to the findings of a new Lancet Commission, which includes input from experts at Nottingham’s NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).

Nearly 780 people die from cirrhosis or liver cancer every day in Europe - conditions which are largely preventable.

A major new report from the EASL (European Association for the Study of the Liver) –Lancet Commission on Liver Health in Europe warns that liver disease is an escalating public health crisis across the World Health Organization European Region.

One of the report’s key recommendations is earlier detection of liver disease, along with joined-up care for people who often have multiple health conditions – areas where Nottingham’s scientists and clinicians have been innovative.

Professor Neil Guha, Co-Lead for Nottingham BRC’s Gastrointestinal and Liver research theme, is one of the authors of the EASL-Lancet commission report.

He said: “Liver disease is one of the biggest health burdens across Europe and has now reached the status of an escalating public health crisis.”

Helping families with our world leading maternity research 🔬

At Nottingham University Hospitals, we aim to provide opportunities for as many people to take part in our research as possible 👏

In Family Health, we provide a portfolio of studies to our families and endeavour to shape future care and outcomes for our mothers and their families.

In this video, we spoke to Amy Marriott, research midwife and trial co-ordinator for Research & Innovation, about two important research studies that are underway at our hospitals 🏥

We are one of several hospitals offering the Generation Study, in partnership with Genomics England. This tests babies for over 200 genetic conditions, shortly after the baby is born.

Families across the UK are often left to cope with the long-term impact of a child’s critical illness with little support after leaving paediatric intensive care, a new NIHR-funded study has found 🙌

The research followed families for up to nine months after discharge and revealed ongoing physical, psychological and social challenges for many, affecting not only children, but parents and siblings too 🔬

The findings highlight the need for better follow-up care, psychological support, and improved coordination between hospital and community services to support families during recovery 🤝

Nottingham clinical researchers working to find new hope for patients with End Stage Liver Disease

Liver disease rates are rising in the UK, having quadrupled over the last 40 years 📈

For patients with end stage liver disease (decompensated cirrhosis) there are currently no licensed therapies capable of helping the liver recover and thus preventing the disease from progressing further. New innovations are urgently needed 🔬

Now, Nottingham’s NIHR Clinical Research Facility (CRF) is working with Resolution Therapeutics, a biopharmaceutical company developing Regenerative Macrophage Therapies, on an early-stage clinical trial, called the EMERALD study. We’re investigating whether patients’ own immune cells can be re-engineered to treat end stage liver disease, by helping the liver to recover 🧫

Our research is helping the UK’s 18 million people with permanent hearing loss Today, March 3, is World Hearing Day, with a focus on ensuring no child is let behind due to their ear or hearing problems this year.

Although they affect one in five of the UK’s population, hearing disorders remain under-researched nationally and account for high morbidity levels. Around 18 million people in the UK live with permanent hearing loss.

In Nottingham, we make a major contribution to advancing hearing care with a leading-edge research programme.

Our NIHR Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre’s Hearing Theme is one of only three such specialist NIHR centres of excellence in the UK and has a focus on patient and clinician led priorities with research programmes spanning tinnitus, hyperacusis, and hearing loss.

The work of our theme centres on better phenotyping and case finding, assessing new interventions and outcome measures.
