Last Friday, our BA (Hons) Broadcast Journalism students took part in Mock Interviews and an Assessment Day designed to mirror the realities of the industry.

Students were interviewed by leading professionals including:

⭐ Martin Slack — Editor, BBC Radio Nottingham
⭐ Claire Catlow — Senior Content Editor, Cartwright Communications
⭐ Owen Bradley — Lead Presenter, RamsTV
⭐ Jamie Slack — Digital Marketing Manager
⭐ Arti Lukha — Managing Editor, ITN (joining us online)

Alongside interviews, students also completed a group assessment challenge — building a structure from newspapers and tape that was strong enough to support a tennis ball, while fitting within strict limits.

The task encouraged teamwork, self-awareness, communication, and the ability to give and receive constructive feedback — all essential skills for a career in broadcast journalism.

A huge thank you to our industry guests for sharing their time and expertise 👏

🍂 Learning through creativity and nature 🍂

Our first-year BA (Hons) Primary Education (QTS) students have been getting creative outdoors at Clifton Campus, taking inspiration from British artist Andy Goldsworthy. 🌿✨

Using fallen autumn leaves, twigs, and natural materials, they explored how outdoor art can support children’s holistic development - encouraging curiosity, creativity, mindfulness, and a deeper connection with nature. 🍁🎨

Hands-on experiences like this help our students see how learning beyond the classroom can inspire imagination and emotional growth in young children. 🌈

How can play inspire learning? ✨

Our third-year BA (Hons) Primary Education (QTS) students on the 3–7 route have been diving into the world of provocations for play - exploring how carefully designed environments and resources can spark curiosity, imagination, and deep learning in early years settings. 🌈✨

Through hands-on activities and discussion, they’ve been discovering how play can be used to inspire creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration in young children, key skills for lifelong learning.

We can’t wait to see how these future teachers bring their ideas to life in the classroom! 🍎💫

👏 Huge congratulations to Amy Stokes, Khadiza A., Trisha Chopra, and Lily Sibanda for contributing to the The British Psychological Society’s Teachers’ Toolkit!

Their work has been published in the latest booklet, “A student’s guide to university transition”, an incredible achievement that will support pre-university psychology students across the UK.

📖 The Teachers’ Toolkit, developed by the BPS in collaboration with the The Association for the Teaching of Psychology (ATP) and the British Psychological Society Division of Academics, Researchers, and Teachers in Psychology (DARTP), provides free, BPS-approved resources to help psychology teachers deliver engaging and impactful learning.

Professor Julie Hulme commented:

“It’s great to see Nottingham Trent University (NTU) students listed as authors, you’ve offered fantastic advice for future students. Not only will this support A-level teachers in preparing their classes, but it also showcases NTU in the best light. We’ll also be able to share it with our own new students!”

We’d also like to thank Professor Helen Brown, Dr Jessica S. Dunn, Ph.D., and Dr Russell Turk for their dedicated support throughout this project.

🌟 Well done to all involved, a brilliant example of NTU students making an impact beyond the university.

Can memes be more than just jokes?

A new report by Nottingham Trent University in the UK and Aarhus University in Denmark reveals how internet memes are being used as digital weapons in the fight against Russian disinformation.

From grassroots groups like NAFO to wider efforts supporting Ukraine, memes are helping to challenge propaganda, boost morale, and improve media literacy.

But the rise of meme warfare also raises ethical questions around graphic content and moderation.

A new report by Nottingham Trent University (NTU) reveals how internet memes have become powerful tools in the global fight against information disorder during the war in Ukraine.

🚗 Motorcyclists make up less than 1% of UK traffic yet account for almost 20% of road fatalities.

New research from Nottingham Trent University’s School of Social Sciences reveals how psychology may be contributing to these alarming figures and how a simple intervention could make a real difference.

🧠 Our brains are wired to detect what we expect to see. For many drivers, that means motorcyclists can go unnoticed, especially in blind spots.

Led by Professor David Crundall and funded by The Road Safety Trust, our research team found that a short video tutorial helped drivers better understand motorcycle-related hazards:

🔹 92% reported improved awareness
🔹 88% said they would change their driving behaviour

By addressing the cognitive causes of missed detections, this tool could help save lives.
