Back in the USSR 📸

After reading our recent Industrial Economics 75th anniversary article, course alumna Sally Jones (née Kay, 1984–87) got in touch with her own memories and photographs of the department’s 1980s study visits to Hungary and the Soviet Union.

Subsidised by the British Council, these trips reflected an academic culture that encouraged direct engagement with how different economic systems operated around the world.

Sally's recollections and photos vividly bring to life the outward-looking spirit of the course - and the lasting impact of seeing life under Communism at first hand.

More excellent running content from you - we received these photos from Alan Wilson (Electrical Engineering, 1964).

He said: “At 72 I was still running half-marathons in under two hours. Alas, now aged 83, I think I’m finished racing.”

The University of Nottingham was recently privileged to host four doctors from the Cambodian Children's Fund (CCF) at the Cripps Health Centre, as part of our ongoing collaboration with the charitable organisation.

During the visit, it became clear that there are huge parallels between the clinical work which takes place at the Cripps Health Centre and the work of the CCF team in Cambodia, albeit separated by different cultures, opportunities and several thousand miles.

A little light weekend reading courtesy of Sir John Sawers (Physics and Philosophy, 1976).

We caught up with him to reflect on the role of diplomacy in the modern world and how Nottingham has its role to play in helping create the next generation of leaders. https://bit.ly/3P3Y2kS

Some of you will have joined us on Wednesday night to hear from Chief Operating Officer of Sledgehammer Games Andy Wilson (Computer Science, 2001) - the game developer responsible for many titles in the iconic Call of Duty Series.

Of course we had to ask him to share his top 5 games of all time! How many have you played? What did you play to distract you from revision? 🎮
