Tomorrow (3rd October) is one of the most important day's in the German calendar; der Tag der deutschen Einheit, and this year will mark 30 years since reunification. However, today we will focus on deutsche Reinheit, more specifically das deutsche Reinheitsgebot, which regulates the ingredients used in German beer.

Herzlich Willkommen and welcome to the start of a new term, we hope you get settled in as quickly as possible!

The influence of German can be found all over the world, not just in former colonies but where Germans have settled, such as in the USA, often naming towns after their hometown.

On the Eastern seaboard of the USA, for example, you can drive from Cologne to Dresden via several Hamburgs and Han(n)overs in under a day, in a quicker time than you could do the same route in Germany! (Although you spend a big chunk on the A7...)

Congratulations to all of our graduands today!

Where will your journey take you next? If your plans to go to Germany have been cancelled, you can use this map which provides a Germanic name for English towns (and also the reverse) so you can feel like you're in Germany regardless!

All the best for the future from the Universität Nossingheim (and our Partnerstadt, Charlesrow in the state of Bath-Wirdberry)

***The Sixth Cambridge Undergraduate Conference in German Studies will be taking place at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, on Saturday 8 February 2020***

Undergraduates of German Studies, or a degree containing an element of German, at universities in the UK and Ireland are invited to apply to present a 15-minute paper on an aspect of the topic "Invention and Innovation". Mentoring for speakers will be available from Cambridge postgraduates, and speakers are provided with free accommodation and a free dinner, and will be refunded for travel costs (up to £100). There will be a £10 registration fee to cover lunch and refreshments, and assistance can be provided in finding accommodation for conference attendees who are not giving a talk.

We aim to put together as diverse a programme as possible; presentations in both German or English are warmly welcomed! In previous years, speakers have developed topics and themes from year abroad projects and dissertations.

If you wish to speak, please fill in the registration form and submit an abstract (150-200 words) for a 15-minute presentation related to 'Invention and Innovation' by Sunday 1st December 2019:
https://forms.gle/FL5CmM9CZZH1cFTT9

Successful applicants will be informed by the end of term. NB: due to time constraints, some applicants may be offered the chance to present and display a poster.

We will be announcing our keynote speaker shortly.

Registration (for speakers and attendees) will open soon: a link to book online will be available on the conference website: https://www.mml.cam.ac.uk/german/undergraduates/conferences

Please contact [email protected] with any questions.

Thank you for your interest in presenting a paper or poster at the upcoming Cambridge Undergraduate Conference in German Studies. Please use this form to submit an abstract (150-200 words) and don't forget to leave your name and e-mail address. We aim to inform you as to the outcome of our decision....

Heute ist der österreichische Nationalfeiertag!

Austria celebrate their National Day on today on 26th October celebrating the establishment of the Austrian constitution in 1955.

So what is Austria famous for today? Stefanie Sargnagel presents her satirical take on the alpine republic:
