What makes a cinema more than just a place to watch films? 🎬
For Evan, a Master’s student in the School of Art, the answer lies in its community.
His research explores how the community around Oxford’s independent Ultimate Picture Palace (UPP) helps shape its identity. As a UPP volunteer himself, Evan is creating a documentary film that captures the stories, memories and experiences that make the cinema special — including the moments and conversations that might otherwise be lost.
Through filmmaking and oral histories, his project asks: how does a community help create the identity of an independent cinema?
And could the UPP’s experience offer inspiration for other independent cinemas and the communities around them?
