Originally established as ā€˜The King's Hall and College of Brasenoseā€™ for the study of sophistry, logic, philosophy and, above all, theology. The founders of Brasenose College were Sir Richard Sutton, a lawyer, and William Smyth, Bishop of Lincoln. The name of the College has always fascinated visitors to Oxford. There have been several interpretations of it, including the suggestion that it is derived from ā€˜brasen huis' (brewhouse). The most likely explanation is that it refers to a ā€˜brazen' (brass or bronze) door knocker in the shape of a nose.

We are delighted to announce that Frewin Hall was the winner of the 2026 OxProp Award for Best Legacy and Restoration Building. The refurbishment project was intended to restore much of the building's original character that had been obscured in previous modernisation projects, while simultaneously introducing cutting-edge sustainability and opening up new communal spaces.

The refurbishment was overseen by Brasenose Domestic Bursar Kris Sadler, with Bursar Phil Parker as the project sponsor and Cliff Jones the Clerk of Works. The College would like to sincerely thank alumnus Tim Lee (Modern History, 1990) of Lee/Fitzgerald architects, who administered the work from start to completion, and our other partners on the project, Wooldridge & Simpson, Andrew Alder Associates, Ridge & Partners, and Beyond Carbon.

The OxProp awards programme is tailored to the Oxfordshire property market, with the criteria covering areas such as approach to Corporate Social Responsibility, contribution to climate change / net-zero mitigation, biodiversity, green space and the impact on society and/or the environment.
