It's Black History Month, and today we celebrate Sarah Nyendwoha Ntiro, who is remembered for her legacy in civil and women’s rights. She was the first woman from East and Central Africa to graduate from Oxford University. She was born in Uganda and came to St Anne’s from 1951-1954.

After graduating, Nyendwoha Ntiro began her career at Gayaza High School. There, she discovered her pay to be less than her male coworkers: ‘I compared it with the salaries of my male counterparts who had been to Oxford and Cambridge and had also started work at the beginning of 1955. They were being paid more.’ She decided to reject the salary: she offered free labour, rather than be paid less than her male counterparts to make a point about the gender pay gap. The protest succeeded: ‘it was not a coincidence, therefore, that when the salaries were paid, I found that I had received the same wages as my friends.’

Sarah Nyendwoha Ntiro’s memoir, "Emboldened", is now available in the St Anne's College Library.

October is and today we’re looking at the extraordinary Professor Merze Tate, who attended The Society of Oxford Home-Students (now St Anne’s College) from 1932 to 1935.

Professor Merze Tate’s life is full of firsts, breaking racial and gender barriers in pursuit of education.

Last week we bade a sad farewell to Dining Hall Manager Colin Yon, an indispensable presence at St Anne's for the past 24 years -- he is now heading back to his native St Helena for a well-deserved retirement. He will be hugely missed!

🚣 Women’s Rowing Centenary – warm-up race this Saturday

As you may know, next year marks the centenary of women’s rowing at Oxford. In advance of next year’s celebrations, a special warm-up race will take place this Saturday, 26 September, between an Oxford crew and Newnham College, Cambridge – who formed the first Cambridge women’s boat.

We’re delighted that the Oxford crew will include current St Anne’s rowers, alongside rowers from Somerville and St Hilda’s.

If you happen to be in or around Oxford this weekend, do come down to Christ Church Meadow and cheer them on! The race is due to begin at 12 noon, with spectators making their way through the Meadow towards Boathouse Island.

The event will include both a judged style race and a timed piece, echoing the early days of women’s rowing, and will be filmed as part of the centenary project.

It would be wonderful to see some St Anne’s faces on the banks! 💙🚣

Wishing you a meaningful Yom Kippur from all at St Anne's.
