Thanks to the generosity of alumni we have reached our target to secure funding for a student reading for an MSc in Statistical Sciences in memory of Peter Clifford!

Established in memory of a much admired Fellow and Tutor in Mathematics, Peter served at Jesus from 1976 to 2010 inspiring those in his charge. This new studentship will support a brilliant graduate student at Jesus College in the 2027 academic year and provide high-level training in a subject that is increasingly important in the modern world. Thank you to everyone who supported the appeal!

Taking time out of revision to catch up with friends in the spring sunshine.

“Love is like the wild rose-briar,
Friendship like the holly-tree—
The holly is dark when the rose-briar blooms
But which will bloom most constantly?
The wild rose-briar is sweet in spring,
Its summer blossoms scent the air;
Yet wait till winter comes again
And who will call the wild-briar fair?
Then scorn the silly rose-wreath now
And deck thee with the holly’s sheen,
That when December blights thy brow
He still may leave thy garland green.”

(Emily Brontë, ‘Love and Friendship’)

Congratulations to Dr Dani Lustig, a Helen Zhang Research Associate in Chemistry at Jesus, who received a poster prize for her solar fuels research at the recent Renewable Energy: Solar Fuels Gordon Research Conference in Lucca, Italy. Dani attended the conference with support from College’s Major Research Grants Fund, which enabled her to present her research, “Towards Efficient Solar Fuel Production with Hybrid Polymer-Inorganic Photocatalysts”. Congratulations to five Jesus Modern Languages undergraduates who competed in College’s inaugural Stella Prize last week, a French and English eloquence competition which challenged their language skills through presentations involving poetry, prose, critical analysis and a live audience! The Stella Prize was devised by French lecturer Stéléna Serhane, pictured (centre) with students Magnus, Yeva, David, George and Emmanuelle, and judges Laurent Voulzy, a French singer-songwriter (far left), and Dr Marine Ganofsky, lecturer in French at St Andrews (third from right). Thank you to everyone for a wonderful evening, and well done to Magnus, David, and Yeva who jointly won first prize.

We are pleased to be fundraising for an MSc in Statistical Science in memory of Peter Clifford. But why is Statistics important? Hear from our Research Associate in Statistics, Machine Learning, and AI, Dr Jakob Zeitler, as he discusses common misconceptions about the subject and why it is so crucial in the modern world.
