Primate Paths

Primate Paths Welcome to Primate Paths! In this page and channel we share primate news, talks, workshops and life journeys. Our events are open to all!

Organised by researchers studying the primates of Gorongosa National Park, together with the Primate Models for Hominin Evolution at ICArEHB. Welcome to Primate Conversations - an informal discussion group run by the Primate Models for Behavioural Evolution Lab, at the Institute of Human Sciences, University of Oxford. These weekly presentations/ discussions focus on key research within the many d

isciplines that contribute essential knowledge to understand human evolution -- and we also focus on outreach engagement. We used to meet on Tuesdays (at 3pm --UK time) at 64 Banbury Road, Oxford -- but now we are meeting virtually using our YouTube channel and enjoying your global participation! Expect plenty of diversity of everything: topics, speakers, participation, organisers, moderators and hosts! Follow us here, on Twitter (), and see more information about all our events and research on www.primobevolab.web.ox.ac.uk

Congratulations Lydia Luncz Katarina Warren & all co-authors! A pleasure to collaborate on a great piece of work adding to the good Primate Archaeology literature! ICArEHB Gorongosa National Park

The archaeological record offers insights into our evolutionary past by revealing ancient behaviour through stone and fossil remains. Percussive foraging is suggested to be particularly relevant for the emergence of tool-use in our lineage, yet early hominin percussive behaviours remain largely unde...

Another incredibly important publication led by Elodie Freymann on bark feeding behaviour and the potential medicinal value of this behaviour for apes. Elodie is on fire publishing her PhD papers at high speed - and I am so very proud of her work, and the work of all the collaborators who accepted her in Budongo, closely guided the field work and made Elodie's research possible in the lab: Cat Hobaiter Budongo Conservation Field Station Mike Huffman Daniel Sempebwa and all.

The ingestion of bark has been observed across the animal kingdom and is well documented in free-ranging chimpanzees. Thus far, the best-supported hypothesis for the adaptive function of this behavior is the fallback food hypothesis, which asserts that chimpanzees consume bark and cambium when prefe...

Super congratulations to Dr Elodie Freymann, the amazing team that worked so hard at Budongo Conservation Field Station, to Dr Fabien Schultz Ethnopharmacology Lab, to Cat Hobaiter for the amazing guidance and mentoring, and Mike Huffman -- with infinite knowledge about this topic. It was an honour for me to see this work develop & to be part of the journey. The article is everywhere in the world news today, and it is well deserved. It is important to spread the news in multiple languages, so that the science can be understood by all. 🙌🐵🌿

Estudo, que envolveu uma investigadora portuguesa, sugere que os chimpanzés doentes procuram plantas específicas pelos seus efeitos medicinais, nomeadamente antibióticos e anti-inflamatórios.

And another publication on the Gorongosa baboons by Lucy Katherine Baehren is out. I love this piece and how Lucy revisited a classic piece of work and tested its tenets using our wonderful primates of Gorongosa National Park :) Congratulations everyone involved in making this research happen 🙌🌺
