🏅 What is it about neutrinos that keeps attracting Nobel Prizes?

The 2026 Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to Francis Halzen for his pioneering work on the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos from space.
This marks the fifth Nobel Prize recognising research into these elusive particles.

🌍 What is lost when we translate words, but not humour, rhythm, culture or context? This , we’re celebrating the distinctly human creativity involved in moving between languages and cultures.

That idea is at the heart of Oxford’s new Master’s in Creative Translation, led by Queen’s Professor Karen Leeder. Combining academic study with hands-on creative practice, the course will explore translation across literature, theatre, film and experimental media, while asking an increasingly important question in the age of AI: what can human translators do that machines cannot?

As Professor Leeder puts it: “The ability to imagine, interpret, and connect across languages and cultures remains a distinctly human endeavour.”

Students will also benefit from the course’s close connection with the Queen's Translation Exchange (QTE), joining a community of translators through events, reading groups, seminars, and opportunities to get involved as QTE Ambassadors.

🧠 What if we could change the chemistry of one precise area of the brain without invasive surgery?

Extraordinary Junior Research Fellow in Psychology Dr Nima Khalighinejad is developing a pioneering approach which uses focused ultrasound to allow drugs to reach specific regions of the brain.

The research could give neuroscientists a more precise way to investigate how chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine shape everything from mood and motivation to learning and decision-making. We spoke to Nima about his work.

🎉 Congratulations to former Junior Research Fellow Dr Selena Wisnom, whose book 'The Library of Ancient Wisdom: Mesopotamia and the Making of History' has been shortlisted for the 2026 Wolfson History Prize.

Her book explores the remarkable survival of 33,000 clay tablets from ancient Mesopotamia, that reveal a sophisticated world of literature, religion, medicine, magic and more. Now a Lecturer at the University of Leicester, Dr Wisnom said she was thrilled by the recognition and hopes it will encourage more people to study Assyriology.

🎓 Meet our MCR President, Jennice!

Jennice is a DPhil researcher in Archaeological Science, studying ancient trees to understand and date the past, and she’s also a familiar face in the MCR (the Queen’s graduate community) after two years on the MCR committee.

At the heart of her plans as President is a simple idea: making sure the graduate community is a place where everyone feels they belong, whether they’re regulars at every event or just dropping in for coffee and a chat. We caught up with Jennice about the work that goes on behind the scenes to achieve this, and how she balances her role with her research.

📚🌍 Bringing creative translation into the classroom

Today we’re launching the Anthea Bell Prize 2026–27 with a new Resources Library, making it easy for language teachers to find the right supporting materials for their classes.

The 130+ free resources can now be searched by language, topic, grammar and curriculum and there are more resources to come. New poetry resources are available now, with fresh fiction and non-fiction packs following later this year.

Launched by the Queen’s College Translation Exchange in 2020, the Anthea Bell Prize brings creative and inclusive translation into classrooms across the UK with a record 25,000 students taking part last year.
