OPHI - Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative OPHI is a global research centre on multidimensional poverty measurement and analysis at Oxford Uni.

OPHI is an economic research centre within the Oxford Department of International Development at the University of Oxford. OPHI's mission is to reduce poverty by ensuring that policy is grounded in people's experiences and values. OPHI works toward this by:

• Broadening poverty measurement. OPHI develops and implements multi-dimensional measures of poverty, well-being and inequality. These measur

es go beyond traditional one-dimensional approaches to incorporate dimensions such as health, education, living standards, quality of work and more innovative dimensions.

• Improving data on poverty. OPHI has developed tools to measure five missing dimensions of poverty data that poor people value but which have been largely overlooked in international studies of poverty to date: Quality of Work, Empowerment, Physical Safety, The Ability to go About Without Shame and Psychological Wellbeing.

•Building capacity. OPHI runs academic courses and technical training programmes on multidimensional poverty and human development, and collaborates with universities, development agencies, governments and other research institutions and policy makers using our work.

•Impacting policy. OPHI's methodologies have been adopted by policy makers, including national governments and the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Report.

Don’t miss this ‘MPPN Dialogue’ on 30 June, exploring ‘Pathways to Peace and Poverty Eradication: Multidimensional Poverty in Fragile Contexts’.

The webinar will explore the relationship between multidimensional poverty, fragility, and peacebuilding.

Ricardo Nogales, OPHI Research Associate, will present findings from the Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) 2024, which found that poverty and conflict remain deeply intertwined.

Mustafa Yağci, Senior Research Economist at the Islamic Development Bank Group - isdb.org , will share findings from the recent Islamic Development Bank-OPHI Brief, ‘Nexus between Conflict, Fragility and Poverty’.

Mohamed Abdinur, Somali Integrated Statistics and Economic Planning Capacity Building, will share Somalia's experience in the development of their national MPI.

The Multidimensional Women’s Empowerment Index, or MWEI, is a novel measure based on the Alkire-Foster (AF) method - the tool which underpins the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI).

The AF method is a counting method characterised by its ability to measure complex topics in their multiple dimensions. This flexible, policy-relevant tool highlights the depth and breadth of people's lived experiences. The MWEI leverages the technical innovation of the AF method to identify how far women exercise power in four basic life domains: health, material environment, social relationships, and physical integrity.

In this article for Dimensions magazine, Jhonatan Clausen and Patricia Ruiz-Bravo from the Instituto de Desarrollo Humano de América Latina - PUCP share more about the MWEI and how it was built. They also explore what its key findings tell us about women’s empowerment across 45 low- and middle-income countries.

As violent conflict intensifies across world regions, progress to ending poverty is under growing pressure.

The close relationship between poverty and conflict demands integrated and coordinated responses. In this context, Multidimensional Poverty Indices (MPIs) have emerged as practical instruments to support more effective and targeted policy responses in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

On Tuesday 30 June, the Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network (MPPN) will host an ‘MPPN Dialogue’ on the topic ‘Pathways to Peace and Poverty Eradication: Multidimensional Poverty in Fragile Contexts’.

Our speakers will explore the relationship between multidimensional poverty, fragility, and peacebuilding, drawing on the experiences of Colombia and Somalia.

En este artículo de Dimensions de Ana María Marín Morales, aprendemos cómo el Instituto de Planificación de Jamaica (PIOJ) incluyó hallazgos de grupos focales para ayudar a identificar las privaciones más relevantes que debían incluirse en el Índice de Pobreza Multidimensional (IPM) Nacional de Jamaica.

Un total de 357 participantes formaron parte de grupos focales realizados en 17 comunidades de 7 parroquias, abarcando zonas urbanas y rurales seleccionadas en función de sus altos niveles de pobreza monetaria.

Las discusiones recopilaron opiniones sobre cómo se percibe y conceptualiza la pobreza, qué tipos de privaciones experimentan las personas en Jamaica, cómo los ciclos de pobreza se repiten a lo largo de las generaciones y cuáles son las fallas y brechas sistémicas e institucionales.

Los hallazgos contribuyeron a la selección y ponderación de los indicadores del IPM Nacional, lanzado en enero, y ayudaron a orientar la selección de desagregaciones para monitorear a grupos vulnerables, como la niñez y las personas con discapacidad.
