On this beautiful day, we're grateful for the shady spots in our gardens. One of the highlights of Trinity, and every, term, is the tree walks that our Chaplain, Jane, leads each week. We've enjoyed learning about our trees, including a holm oak, silver pendent lime, tulip tree, golden yew, purple beech, cedar of Lebanon, gingko, giant redwood, tree of heaven, incense cedar, Corsican pine, magnolia and a rare Chinese gutta-percha.

Professor Bernhard Staresina, our Tutorial Fellow in Psychology, has been awarded a major European Research Council Advanced Grant for his Ontogeny of Memory (MemOnto) project. Addressing the paradox known as infantile amnesia. MemOnto will provide the first integrative account of how and when memory becomes truly enduring in the human brain – and why our earliest memories fade. Prof Staresina said:
“Receiving the Advanced Grant allows me and my team to apply our work on sleep and memory to one of the most intriguing remaining puzzles in psychology and neuroscience - why do we remember so little from a time when we learned so much? It fosters an exciting collaborative network within and beyond Oxford, spanning developmental psychologists, rodent electrophysiologists and computational modelers.”
Many congratulations to Prof Staresina on his ERC Advanced Grant:

'Programmable shape transformations of electro-mechanical metamaterial muscles', coauthored by Ekaterina Hertog, our Associate Professor of AI and Society, is published by Royal Society Open Science:

Abstract. Studies of electromagnetic and mechanical metamaterials are, for the large part, two quite separate disciplines. Here, we explore the potential f

In the last week of Trinity term, Francesco Licausi, our Professor of Molecular Plant Physiology, explored the synergies between the arts and sciences at an exhibition showing the connections between art and plant molecular biology. ‘Cells to Canvas: Molecular Biology Meets Art’, included pieces by four artists, who gave accompanying talks about their work.
Artist/Scientist, Dr Besiana Sinanaj, spoke on ‘Where Art, Nature, and Science are Woven Together’, which she explores further in her paintings.
Dr Jodie Armand gave a talk on ‘Bioforms’, describing how she makes physical depictions of what had previously only existed on a computer by creating leaf pores sculptures.
Dr Hsuan Pai is interested mainly in 2D digital work. Pai uses drawings and illustrations to convey complex ideas in an accessible way. Her work has appeared on a number of scientific journal covers.
Dr Nick Desnoyer described how he applies his research in plant biology and genetic engineering approaches to create unique flowers, with bespoke structures and colour-changing properties, to increase public engagement and to inspire future plant biotechnologists.
Prof Licausi concluded the event with a reflection on how events that connect art and science demonstrate the synergy between art and plant science, bringing people to appreciate the marvels of nature at different scales and providing opportunities to develop new and optimize existing forms of art.
