This we reflect how Campion Hall is lucky to have poetry in the very fabric of its building. In the right light, a poem can be seen etched onto a windowpane of the door leading from the entrance hall to the garden. It reads:

You who read this fickle page
Illustrated by the sun,
Scribbled by the shower’s rage,
Altering as the minutes run,
Think how alteration must
All endeavours bring to dust,
All that’s mortal, man and house,
And of mercy, pray for us.

The poem is illustrated by a cross surrounded by campion flowers at the top, and an hourglass lying on a sickle surrounded by more campion flowers underneath.

The poem was the work of Laurence Whistler (1912-2000), a British glass engraver and poet. An undergraduate at Balliol College in the early 1930s, Whistler visited the Hall in its new Brewer Street building shortly after it had opened. He gave the inscribed poem, one of his earliest works, as a gift to the Hall. The Hall’s Benefactors Book records it as ‘the poem written with a diamond on glass (a pane of the north-east door into the garden)’.
