Oxford Astrophysics Oxford Astrophysics: understanding the Universe at the University of Oxford's Department of Physics.

Oxford Astrophysics engages in world-class research spanning a wide range of astronomy and astrophysics, from the largest scales in the Universe to observational work on stars, the interstellar medium and extra-solar planets.. Oxford Astrophysics is also home to the Philip Wetton telescope, a fantastic resource for teaching in Oxford, and for local schools and colleges. The 0.4 metre telescope, bu

ilt in 1995 by the Meade Corporation of California, was given to the University so that undergraduate and graduate students could observe the night sky as would a professional astronomer. It is located in a purpose-built observatory atop the Denys Wilkinson Building in Keble Road, and is the first new observatory built in Oxford for over a century. Every month during autumn, spring and winter the telescope is opened to schools, community groups and the general public so that everyone can enjoy the excitement of practical astronomy.

What might Earth look like to an alien living 10 light years away? We're assuming he or she has access to a decent space telescope, of course. A new paper led by Professor Pat Irwin examines what information about Earth's atmosphere might be recoverable from its transit spectrum, observed from 10 li…

In a few hours, ESO be making one of the most symbolic steps towards the world's largest telescope, by blasting the top of Cerro Armazones in preparation of the E-ELT. You can watch along live here; http://new.livestream.com/ESOastronomy. Proceedings are due to start around 17:30 BST today (19th June)

Don't expect a man-made volcano though; the idea is just to fracture the rock, not take the whole top of the mountain off in one go! :)

Oxford's Aprajita Verma gave a nice overview for the BBC here; http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-27902611
