Founded in 1525 as 'Cardinal College', Christ Church is both a constituent college of the University of Oxford and home to Oxford's Cathedral. It is one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford and the Cathedral Church for the Diocese of Oxford. It has a world famous Cathedral Choir; scholarly collections of books and art; and is enjoyed by many people as visitors or guests at conferences and Summer schools. Christ Church has a fascinating history and many distinguished people have studied here including John Locke, Robert Hooke, John Wesley, Robert Peel, William Gladstone, W.H. Auden, David Dimbleby, Rowan Williams, Richard Curtis, Jan Morris and Howard Goodall.

Opening today: Translating the Bible, a new exhibition at Christ Church exploring the remarkable story of how the Bible has travelled across languages, cultures and centuries.

Marking 500 years since the publication of William Tyndale’s New Testament, the exhibition brings together treasures from Christ Church Library’s collections, including a 13th-century French manuscript New Testament and translations by Wycliffe, Coverdale and Tyndale.

A highlight is Brasenose College’s 13th-century Founder’s Bible, on public display for the first time, generously lent by the Principal and Governing Body.

Entries are now open for the Christopher Tower Poetry Competition, which has been celebrating the creative talent of young poets across the UK for more than 25 years.

Since 2000, more than 15,000 poems have been submitted from nearly 2,500 schools. This year, students aged 16–18 who are educated in the UK are invited to respond to the theme ‘The Deep’.

The competition is free to enter and offers a £5,000 first prize, with more than £14,000 awarded in total. Entries will be judged anonymously by poets Liz Berry and Vona Groarke, alongside Christopher Tower Student Dr Anna Nickerson.

How old is your immune system?

Christ Church’s Professor Dirk Aarts is one of the directors of a new £1 million Oxford Martin research programme exploring how our immune systems change over a lifetime – and whether understanding our ‘immune age’ could ultimately help identify disease risk before symptoms appear.

The team will analyse millions of immune-receptor sequences from healthy people across a wide range of ages, helping to build a clearer picture of healthy immune ageing and why some people fight infection or respond to vaccines more effectively than others.

Professor Aarts said: ‘Our immune systems change profoundly over a lifetime, yet we know surprisingly little about what healthy immune ageing looks like.’

🎙️ Is empathy ever a weakness?

Christ Church’s Professor Luke Bretherton recently joined BBC Radio 4’s Moral Maze for a discussion about the place of empathy in our moral and political lives.

The programme explored competing arguments about empathy: whether it can sometimes cloud moral judgement, or whether it is fundamental to caring for vulnerable people and responding to injustice.

The discussion ranged across some of the major ethical and political questions surrounding welfare, immigration and the criminal justice system.

Professor Bretherton is Regius Professor of Moral and Pastoral Theology at Christ Church.
