🗞️ LMH DPhil student Martje Köppen (2023, DPhil Law) has received the inaugural Early Career Researcher Award from the European Association of Climate Law for her work examining how carbon dioxide removal is treated within EU climate law.

The award recognises outstanding research by early-career scholars making an original and significant contribution to European climate law.

Martje’s prize-winning research forms part of her DPhil, which explores climate and energy law and, in particular, the role of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in climate action.

LMH students celebrated some exceptional academic results over the summer, with over 40% our Finalists achieving Firsts and 95% achieving at least a 2:1.

In addition to these strong degree results, 12 LMH students were recognised with University prizes and awards. Students received University awards in Modern Languages, Law, Mathematics and Computer Science, English, Biology, Psychology and Economics, as well as a commendation for exceptional examination performance in Medicine.

We are incredibly proud of all our students’ achievements and we are delighted to launch them towards an equally successful future.

Many elements of Malala Yousafzai’s LMH experience were somewhat unusual.

It was seen as a security risk, for example, for Malala to have her own name on her college ID. So she spent three years seeing the confused looks on people’s faces when they checked her card and saw that it belonged to ‘Jane Lewis’.

“I wanted to go with Jane Austen as my fake name, but that was a bit too obvious,” Malala smiles. “So we thought about Jane Smith, but there are so many Smiths. And then I thought, John Lewis… Jane Lewis, and somehow we ended up there. It would surprise people, because they would see my name on a list and think ‘Who’s Jane Lewis?’ And then I would show up. ‘Oh, this is Jane Lewis!”

When Malala’s portrait was unveiled at the College earlier this year, she reflected on how Oxford gave her the precious chance to finally learn about herself.
