Have you noticed the beavers above the doors to Hartland House? Part of the college ‘mythology’, these beavers quickly became controversial when proposed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott; Principal Grace Hadow specifically asked for their cheeks to be shaved down because she thought they looked too chubby!

A warm welcome to our latest cohort of freshers! We're looking forward to showing them all around the best library in Oxford for their inductions on Monday and Tuesday. Inductions are a great way to show off our collections, but planning them also reminds us just how much can change even over the space of a year!

When it was discovered that she was a girl, Annie Rogers had her scholarship offers withdrawn from Balliol and Worcester colleges, despite her top exam scores in 1873.

These four books were given as her consolation gift, and represent the kind of institutional 'erasure' that women students faced at Oxford before 1920.

Thought to contain Iris Murdoch's academic hood, this suitcase turned out to be full of early newspapers instead, the oldest from 1568! These papers are part of Phyllis Handover's collection, who researched print alongside Stanley Morison.

Drawn up in the 1930's, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's plans favoured a 'bold design' for the first stage of Hartland House. Completed in 1938, it was the first building on site built specifically for use by students.
