Thank you to everyone who stopped by today's ; we enjoyed displaying some of our treasures featuring animals. Our copy of John Johnston's 'A description of the nature of four-footed beasts, with their figures engraven in brass' (1678) has some very striking doodles alongside some of the animals!

New books are here, hot off the processing desk presses, and ready to be read!

Think you don't have time for recreational reading? We have been collecting short stories and novellas especially so time-poor students can read fun new fiction in between tackling set texts.

Search 'five minute fiction' or 'short stories' on UnivCat to see the whole collection.

New kit on the block...🐈

This lovely lady was spotted skulking around University College, Oxford's Merton Street entrance earlier. Happy to see she was bold enough to wonder into our Main Quad! Even happier that she's friendly to Librarians 🥰

Watch out Lyra, looks like you've got competition...

Lots of lovely University College, Oxford members (and a few guests!) turned out for our final Rarities Revealed of 2024. Four our Christmas special, we had on display some Treasures from our more modern Special Collections.

From the Robert Ross Memorial Collection of Oscar Wilde publications and ephemera, we presented several festive issues of Ladies Pictorial, a women's subscription magazine from the late 19th century. (📸1-4)

Univ's Alport Collection has many yuletide goodies, including this intriguing anthology of parodic Christmas stories by Max Beerbohm (a graduate of ). Beerbohm imitated the styles of several contemporary writers, including Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy and H.G. Wells. Apparently Henry James wrote to Beerbohm to congratulate him for such excellent mimicry. (📸5)

Also from our Alport Collection are two Ariel poems written by T.S. Eliot and Siegfried Sassoon. The Ariel poems were published by Faber and designed for collectors to send to their friends as an alternative Christmas card. Each poem was only 1-2 pages long, and accompanied by a specially commissioned modernist illustration. (📸6)
