Before we move on to thinking about the upcoming academic year, we'd like to celebrate a final couple of prizes from the last one - this time from the beginning and end of the undergraduate journey!

William Grunstein (2025, Law with Spanish) was jointly awarded the Law Mods Prize for Criminal Law following the results of the First Year Mods. Will commented, "I was delighted to receive the Law Faculty Prize in Criminal Law. The subject challenged me to reflect upon how the criminal justice system affects all of us because it expresses the values that govern society and reveals how we choose to treat people at their most vulnerable, whether victims, witnesses or defendants. The award is a profound encouragement as I continue my academic endeavours."

Meanwhile, finishing the undergraduate portion of her degree, Sophie Liu (2023, MSci Experimental Pschology) was awarded Best Practical Portfolio in Final Honour School of Experimental Psychology! Sophie reflected: "I'm incredibly surprised, excited, and honored to receive the Best Practical Portfolio Prize. I have absolutely loved studying my modules and genuinely enjoyed working on this portfolio, so it means a lot to have my effort recognized. I would like to thank my friends, tutors, and Somerville College for all the support and encouragement along the way. This experience has given me a lot of confidence and motivation to continue pursuing my passion for psychology."

How did 24 rabbits nearly destroy a continent? Our Former Junior Research Fellow Joel Alves addresses this question for the BBC Ideas series, in a fascinating video, made in collaboration with Oxford's Social Sciences Division! Some of the research featured was published during Joel's time at Somerville, so we are especially proud. Watch here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/videos/c39mlzed10yo

90 years ago, South Riding was published - to celebrate, we thought we’d share a little bit about the story behind the novel, and show you the special edition we have in our archives. Virago are also bringing out a beautiful new edition today, so we recommend getting hold of a copy!

Thank you to Somerville College Archives for the materials, including the graduation photo from the Vera Brittain special collection.

What is medical physics, and why is it important? This summer, our student Alex Quinton (2024, Physics) has been working at the The Institute of Cancer Research on an elasticity-based ultrasound imaging technique. Alex was kind enough to take us with him for a day in the life of his internship, to share a little bit about how physics can help with cancer research.

New BBC drama The Rapture has come out at the perfect time, with its themes of extreme heat and a looming climate apocalypse. Somervillian Liz Jensen (1978, English) wrote the 2009 novel which inspired the show, before going on to co-found the Extinction Rebellion Campaign group Writers Rebel. She joined us to discuss the BBC’s adaptation of her novel, cli-fi, and what comes next. https://www.some.ox.ac.uk/news/meet-the-somervillian-writer-behind-the-bbcs-the-rapture/

Last month we said a bittersweet goodbye to some of our brilliant Sanctuary Scholars, who are finishing their studies at Oxford. It has been so wonderful having Senay G. Mengistu, Hadeel Mohammed, Zainab Abdeen, and Fatema D. Ahmadi become part of our community over the past year, and we wish them the absolute best of luck with their next steps!

We’re very proud of our MCR, who organised a donation drive at the end of Trinity term. Students donated clothes, shoes, reusable bottles, bedsheets, blankets, puffers, and many more items, which have now all been given to Sobell House Hospice Shop on Little Clarendon Street. MCR Enviromental Rep, Ashima Gulati, is pictured here with fellow MCR member, Texas Dongare, and a volunteer from Sobell House. We hope this great initiative can become an annual tradition!
