We are happy to invite you to a book launch with Olga Khomenko on her most recent book, ‘Ukrainians beyond Borders: Nine Life Journeys Through the History of Eastern Europe’!

This book brings to life the remarkable—and often challenging—journeys of nine Ukrainians from Kyiv, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Poltava, along with one Austrian who chose to become Ukrainian. Through their stories, you will explore Ukraine’s complex relationship with its borders—at once a source of danger and division, yet also a space for trade, cultural exchange, and connection.

Olga Khomenko is a Visiting Scholar at the Oxford School of Global & Area Studies and a renowned author on the transnational history of Ukraine and the history of Ukrainian-Japanese relations.

📅 2 June, 17.00

We are excited to invite you to a webinar with Mr. Oleksandr Karasevych, the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the former Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine to the Netherlands!

Mr. Karasevych will speak about how to start a career in the diplomatic service of Ukraine, the prospects the MFA system offers to young professionals, as well as current internship programmes and the first steps in the diplomatic profession.

Oleksandr’s presentation will be followed by a moderated Q&A, where you can ask Mr. Karasevych any questions about the opportunities with the MFA. You are also welcome to submit your questions beforehand in the registration form.

Today, Ukraine’s diplomatic service is not only a profession but also an important mission of serving the people of Ukraine amid the full-scale Russian aggression and complex global challenges. A modern Ukrainian diplomat is a leader, communicator, and strategist, capable of working effectively in crisis conditions, defending Ukraine’s position on the international stage, and building global support for the country.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is consistently opening new opportunities for young people who seek professional development, international experience, and are ready to contribute to shaping the future of Ukrainian diplomacy.

Everyone is welcome to attend!

🎬 Film Screening: Slovo House (2017, Documentary)
📅 13 May 2026 | 🕢 19:30 (doors open 19:15)
📍 Leonard Wolfson Auditorium, Wolfson College

The Oxford Kharkiv Association, the Wolfson College Film Society, and the Oxford University Ukrainian Society warmly invite you to a screening of Slovo House, directed by Taras Tomenko.

This documentary explores the history of the Slovo House (Ukr. Budynok Slovo) in 1920s–30s Kharkiv, then the capital of Soviet Ukraine, and the fate of the Ukrainian writers who lived there. Bringing together archival materials, testimonies, and literary texts, the film reconstructs the lives of those who became central to what is now known as the “Executed Renaissance” - a vibrant cultural movement that was systematically destroyed under Stalinist repression.

Through a careful combination of historical evidence and narrative reconstruction, the film sheds light on how a project intended to cultivate Ukrainian culture became an instrument of surveillance and control, leading to the repression and elimination of an entire intellectual generation.

This documentary version of Slovo House serves as an introduction to the feature version of it that will be screened later in the term, preparing the audience for a deeper understanding of its themes and historical context.

💙💛 This is a charity event. All proceeds support humanitarian efforts in Kharkiv and the region.

Yesterday at Exeter College Chapel, we had the honour of hosting Rev Dr Taras Khomych, a priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and a Senior Lecturer at Liverpool Hope University. Fr Taras offered a moment of prayer and spiritual reflection on compassion, hope, and inner strength.

During his presentation, “Faith at the Crossroads: Ukrainian Churches in Wartime,” he outlined the complexities of the current socio-political and religious situation in Ukraine, tracing its development from the period of the Revolution of Dignity in 2013. Fr Taras spoke of the unity among the major Christian denominations in Ukraine, as well as the strengthening of interreligious relations between Christian Churches and Jewish, Muslim, and other religious communities. These developments began as a response to the anti-democratic actions of Yanukovych’s government against peaceful protesters and grew even stronger as russian aggression unfolded from 2014.

He also elaborated on how these events contributed to the migration of a significant number of parishes and believers from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kyivan Patriarchate and the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, and, after 2018, to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine.

The event concluded with a lively and thoughtful discussion on the history and future of these religious dynamics, their impact on Ukrainian society broadly both within the country and abroad, as well as possible ways forward.

We are very grateful to Fr Taras Khomych for this opportunity to reflect on these important aspects of Ukrainian life and society. We are also deeply grateful to Exeter College, and especially to Revd Andrew Allen, Chaplain of the College, for generously hosting the event in the Chapel. Finally, we would like to thank Roman Lorello for his kind assistance in organising the event.

Join us tomorrow for a concert by Jurij Fedynskyj & family!

The family of Ukrainian-American luthiers returns to Oxford to present medieval songs from England and Ukraine. Jurij is one of very few in the world to support the Kobzar music, a near-extinct tradition.

On Monday, 4 May at 13:00, Rev Dr Taras Khomych (Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church), in cooperation with the Oxford University Ukrainian Society, invites you to a reflective tripartite event at Exeter College Chapel exploring the role of faith in Ukraine amid the ongoing war.

The event will begin with a short prayer service, offering a moment of spiritual grounding rooted in the Ukrainian Christian tradition. This will be followed by an introduction to the theme “Faith at the Crossroads: Ukrainian Churches in Wartime”, addressing how religious communities in Ukraine respond to the moral, social, and existential challenges brought about by russia’s full-scale invasion, an invasion that has systematically targeted civilian life, cultural heritage, and religious institutions.

The final part will be an open discussion, providing space for questions, dialogue, and critical reflection on the role of churches in times of national crisis, their contribution to resilience and humanitarian efforts, and the broader implications for faith in a world marked by violence and uncertainty.

The prayer will be held mostly in Ukrainian, but the discussion will be in English!

All are warmly welcome to attend!
