Oxford University Blind Tasting Society

Oxford University Blind Tasting Society We are a wine-tasting society aimed at wine education through blind wine-tasting. Not strictly restricted to wines - other beverages included!

Blindfolds are not involved; instead the wines are placed in a wine sock so that the label is not seen. The aim of this game is to identify the grape variety used, its origins and the vintage of the wine. This can be achieved through deduction from an accurate description of the wine's appearance, aroma, flavour and structure.

Our team was thrilled and honoured to win the 73rd annual Oxford-Cambridge Varsity blind tasting competition! Under the leadership of coaches Hanneke Wilson and Mikolaj Poplawski, president Lydia Green, and team captain Julian Leidy, we managed to regain the Pol Roger cup, with securing the highest individual score and winning top taster.

We’re hugely grateful to for their generosity in organising yet another great competition! It was a delight to spend time with our peers from Cambridge as well as judges Jancis Robinson MW and Patrick Schmitt MW.

A huge thank-you to our society’s members for their support, especially everyone who trialled for the Varsity competition. We’re also very grateful for the guest speakers who have put on tastings for us and helped us all become better blind-tasters.

Looking forward to next year’s competition!

It was an honour to host Natasha Hughes MW for a Master Class on Beaujolais. From exploring Beaujolais’ diverse soils and distinct vinification styles to learning Natasha’s approach to writing a great tasting note, it was a fantastic evening celebrating the vibrant diversity and character of Beaujolais! Thank you so much for sharing your insights!

to just two days ago — came by Oxford to lead us through a scrumptious and wide-ranging cut of the much-more-than-champagne aka Pol Roger Portfolio. Group favorites included the just released 2012 Pol Roger Blanc de Blancs, the elegant and youthful 2016 Joseph Drouhin Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru, and the bold but balanced 2013 Staglin Family Vineyard Estate Salus Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford, Napa. We cannot wait to welcome Will and Pol back sometime in the near future
