'The experience has been enriching and exciting beyond my wildest expectations.'

Jeremy Leslie-Spinks (Green Templeton, 2020) reflects on his journey to completing a DPhil at Oxford, following a long career in classical ballet, choreography and dance research.

After being diagnosed with a degenerative spinal condition, Jeremy began researching clinician-dancer communication, exploring how medical professionals and dancers can better understand one another when illness or injury affects a dancer’s career, identity and future.

Now graduated, Jeremy hopes to continue this work and explore the role of dance as a potential intervention in public health.

Did you know the Ashmolean Museum is the oldest university museum in the world and Britain's first public museum? It opened in 1683, over 300 years ago.

The museum is home to a vast array of collections and archives which contain more than one million objects and works of art. Highlights include drawings by Raphael, Anglo-Saxon treasures, and Egyptian predynastic sculpture and ceramics. Current displays and exhibitions include ‘Restoring Rome: Roman Oxfordshire Coins’ and ‘Sisters, Brothers and Others: Nationality and 20th-Century Chinese Art’.

Why did the invention of squeezy paint tubes change the course of art history? What role does mathematics play in the Mona Lisa and the Taj Mahal?

These are among the questions explored in The Science of Art, a new book by LMH alumna and art historian Ruth Millington (2010, MSt History of Art).

Written for readers aged seven to nine and illustrated by Rose Blake, the book explores the discoveries, technologies and calculations behind the making and preservation of art.

The Science of Art was published by DK on 6 August.

What can cartoons show that words sometimes can’t?

‘Drawing is a human, interactive activity.’

Ella Baron (Merton College, Oxford, 2014), political cartoonist for The Guardian reflects on satire, visual storytelling and her work as an artist.

Ella began drawing for Cherwell while at Oxford and has since worked with Médecins Sans Frontières in Ukraine, Lebanon and South Sudan on illustration projects about trauma and hope.

She also discusses ‘Interface’, her debut graphic novel, which brings together social satire, sci-fi and romance, with a focus on technology, the environment and social inequality. It will be published by Virago in 2028.

Discover rare and endangered trees from around the world at Harcourt Arboretum. 🌳

The site became part of Oxford Botanic Garden in 1963, with the purpose of preserving the collection of North American conifers and growing trees that were too large for the garden or where the soil was too alkaline.

Today, experts travel the globe to find rare trees and collect their seeds, which are then grown in the arboretum to help ensure that species survive outside of their threatened native habitats.

Set across more than 130 acres, the arboretum is home to some of the UK’s oldest giant redwood trees, wildflower meadows and a bluebell wood.
