Did you study at South Devon College in the 1980s? Damon Shorland did (pictured mid-right). He started on a basic craft course in 1986, back when it was South Devon Tech in Torquay, and still remembers his lecturers by name more than 40 years later 🧑‍🍳

He went on to cook on P&O ships, run five restaurants at the Science Museum and look after catering for a trade union headquarters for 15 years. Read his full story here, and tell us in the comments if you remember Mr Gunn, Mr Hill or Mr Brooks:

This afternoon, our students have been out on Long Road clearing the area around our Paignton campus.

Caring for the environment is part of everyday life at South Devon College, and a cleaner Long Road makes a real difference to our neighbours and everyone who travels along it. Thank you to every student who took part. 🌿

With support from the Connecting People and Landscapes in a Changing Climate project, which brings together farmers, landowners and communities across the South-West and beyond to create a more resilient landscape in the face of a changing climate. Places are open on this and four more RYA courses at South Devon College Marine Academy:

Powerboat Level 2: £340. Two days, starting 24th October, 7th November or 21st November 2026 🚤

Diesel Engine Maintenance: £170. One day, 27th October 2026 🔧

Marine Radio SRC (VHF): £220. One day, 9th November 2026, 7th January or 8th March 2027 📻

Essential Navigation and Seamanship: £270. Two days, starting 12th November 2026 🧭

First Aid: £170. One day, 13th November 2026 🩹

The hat and gloves are on! 🎩

Last year we shared the news that Daisy and Caitlin, two of our T Level Education and Early Years students, had been offered places at Norland. After a gap year, they have now started their course at Norland University of Early Childhood, where they will train to become Norland Nannies.

We are so proud of you both and can't wait to follow your journey. Congratulations, Daisy and Caitlin! 💛

If you'd like a couple of hours a week away from your phone, our Acrylic Painting for Beginners course might suit you. It starts on Thursday 5th November, straight after half term, at our Torquay Campus 🖌️🎨

It's a relaxed group and trying things out is encouraged. Each week covers something new, from mixing colours to adding texture, and by week six you'll have a finished painting.

Thursdays, 1pm to 3pm, for six weeks.
