Hate Crime Awareness Week 📣

Hate Crime Awareness Week (10-17 October) aims to raise awareness about the impact and nature of hate incidents and crimes, as well as highlight ways to report hate crimes and the options available to individuals and communities for support.

We work hard to make our community inclusive and supportive for all, and hope that’s your experience - but if it isn’t, there’s support available for you. You can also report what’s happened if you want to. We say no to discrimination, bullying, intimidation, harassment and abuse of all kinds, including sexual abuse or harassment, racism, islamophobia, antisemitism, homophobia, transphobia and sexism. If you experience or witness any of these, you’ll find all the information you need on our Support and Report web page: https://www.exeter.ac.uk/students/support-report/ Fill out the form to get support and/or report it to us.

🚔Diverse Communities Team Visit 🚔

On Tuesday 13 October, from 10:30-14:00, the Diverse Communities Team at Devon and Cornwall Police will be hosting a stall in the Lower Stannary. They will be on hand to answer any questions you may have about the police approach to hate crime prevention locally, as well as any questions about the wider work of the Diverse Communities Team.

World Mental Health Day

It’s good to talk. It’s even better to be heard.

For World Mental Health Day, we’re encouraging you to make space for conversations about mental health and wellbeing.

Sometimes, being listened to can help you feel understood, less alone and better able to cope with life’s challenges. Here are some tips for talking about mental health

Listen without judgement and give your full attention

Respect boundaries. It’s ok if they don’t want to talk about everything.

Keep the conversation open and supportive. "How are you really feeling?" or "What can I do to help?"

Help them explore their options. Encourage them to consider sources of support that might help.

Check in afterwards.

Need some support? Our wellbeing team are here to help you throughout your studies - see link in bio for wellbeing appointments.

You can also call Spectrum Life’s free, confidential 24/7 helpline on 0800 031 8227, as many times as you need, or self-refer to talking therapies.

Meningitis Awareness Day 📣

Today is World Meningitis Day and an opportunity to raise awareness of meningitis and its symptoms. Meningitis is an infection of the protective layers that cover the brain and spinal cord. It can be very serious and even life-threatening if not treated quickly.

Look out for your flatmates and friends, phone NHS 111 if you have any concerns, and be aware of the symptoms to look out for:

⚠️a high temperature (fever)
⚠️ very cold hands and feet
⚠️ a stiff neck
⚠️ joint and muscle pain
⚠️ a severe headache that is getting worse
⚠️ eye pain when looking at bright lights
⚠️ seizures (fits)
⚠️ vomiting (being sick) and diarrhoea
⚠️ confusion
⚠️ being very sleepy or difficult to wake
⚠️ spots or a rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass (this may be harder to see on brown or black skin)

A person might not have every symptom listed, so get medical help immediately if you think there’s something seriously wrong. Dial 999 and ask for an ambulance.

It is important to protect against the main causes of meningitis such as MenB, MenACWY, pneumococcal, 6-in-1 and MMRV vaccines.

The MenB vaccine is now offered to young people born on or after 21 July 2001 who started university in autumn 2026. The First dose is available until 31 December and the second dose is available until 31 March 2027. Check with your GP to see if your vaccines are up to date.

Liftshare Week 🚗

Driving a car is the least sustainable travel option, but carsharing can limit the impact on the environment. It reduces single occupancy journeys, carbon emissions, congestion and the cost of travel.

To help you find someone to car share with, there is a Liftshare community for anyone working or studying at the University of Exeter, Falmouth University, Falmouth Exeter Plus and the Students’ Union in Penryn, Truro or Falmouth.

Liftshare Week (5-9 October) is your chance to get started, with an opportunity to win one of three £25 vouchers if you sign up to find your car share match this week.

Then, during Liftshare Week, all you need to do is begin car sharing and authenticate your journeys in the app, to be in with a chance of winning a £25 voucher each day. 💷
