For 45 years, the not-for-profit scientific quarterly Mountain Research and Development – edited at CDE since 2000 – has turned mountain research into real-world impact. Now, the global backlash against science and development cooperation has led to a substantial drop in the journal’s institutional funding, with implications for its financial sustainability. This CPD module is not only part of our Master's programme, but it offers a standalone opportunity for people interested in Sustainable Deer Management or already working in fields such as, but not exhaustively, estate management, forestry, agriculture and ecological consultancy. Rosalind Bryce, Catriona Mallows, Inger Elisabeth Måren, Natasha Hutchison, Professor Ram Chaudhary, Sanjeev Neupane and Laxman Neupane PhD have been in the high foothills of the Taplejung area in eastern Nepal last week. They have had the privilege of meeting with local members of the community, including indigenous groups, youth organisations, Kangchenjunga Conservation Area management council members, government representatives and conservation organisations. There has been a huge amount of learning and such warm hospitality!

A very big thanks to Samriddha Pahad UK for their partnership and hosting. Fortunately, we are only a few days in and have many more to go, with discussions and workshops on cultural heritage, climate resilience, biospheres, conservation, rural development, biodiversity, and much more.

Our team members along with Natasha Hutchison from Wester Ross Unesco Biosphere and Inger Elisabeth Måren from the University of Bergen (UiB) have arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal.

We have been so saddened by the recent flooding events in Nepal, and it is not lost on us the devasting and unjust impacts of climate change. We have been lucky enough to join forces with an excellent team in Samriddha Pahad UK and we hope that the discussions that we will have, specifically in the Kangchenjunga region, can have some bearing on the many questions surrounding adaptation and community response to climate change across our respective nations.

What a beautiful place - we are excited to learn and share these learnings over the course of our time here and beyond.

There is a lot of exciting work from CMS staff members just now. Professor Anna Lawrence has published a new paper in Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, where she examines the 30-year evolution of the Mersey Forest, one of the UK's longest-running urban forestry initiatives. The study uses this rare long-term case to explore how urban forest programmes adapt and endure through changing political, financial and environmental contexts.

The findings suggest that success in urban forestry is reflected in more than tree-planting targets. Long-term partnerships, adaptive governance, organisational learning, and evidence-based practice all play critical roles in sustaining impact over time.
