🔬🌱 Research in action, conversations that matter!

As part of Voyage of Discovery: Exploring Research Together, a free programme of public events, school activities and online content from the University of Plymouth , our CRISPS-funded research students had the opportunity to showcase their work and engage directly with the public.

The event sparked inspiring conversations, helping students gain valuable insights into how people perceive research while strengthening their passion for delivering high-quality, impactful science. Visitors also explored the diverse research taking place across the School, tackling real-world challenges in agriculture and sustainable food systems.

A fantastic day of discovery, learning and sharing knowledge with our community. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with our researchers! 🙌

Students from the BSc (Hons) Ocean Exploration and Surveying programme were invited on an expedition to remote Tasiilaq. Endless mountains, glaciers and icebergs. Plus the chance to support real-world research in one of the world's fastest-changing environments. 🧊✨

🌊 World Ocean Day 2026

The ocean is critical to life on Earth, but protecting it takes more than awareness. It takes action.In a new article from , research on Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) highlights the challenges of safeguarding ocean ecosystems in a changing climate.

Featuring insights from Matthew Doherty from the University of Plymouth the piece highlights that some MPAs risk becoming “paper parks”, where damaging activities can still occur, and even well-protected coral reefs are increasingly vulnerable to marine heatwaves.

💙 His message is clear: meaningful ocean protection requires collective action, stronger policy, and collaboration across science and society.

Meet Franz, a final-year PhD researcher at the University of Plymouth, whose work focuses on marine eco-engineering and enhancing biodiversity on urban coastlines 🌊

His research explores how artificial coastal structures like seawalls, breakwaters and harbours can be redesigned to better support marine life. By combining intertidal ecology with innovative design, Franz investigates how increasing structural complexity can help restore benthic communities in built environments.

A key part of his work centres on Living Seawalls - 3D-printed panels inspired by natural habitats such as rockpools and oyster reefs. Installed in Plymouth and around the world, these panels create habitat for marine species while also supporting ecosystem services like blue carbon storage and improved water quality.

Following the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences receiving a Silver Athena Swan award in 2025, Kim Ward will share highlights from the application process and future priorities for advancing gender equality.

An initiative started in 2014 to empower girls to pursue geoscience degrees and careers. Sarah will explore the motivations behind the programme and its impact over the past decade.

A personal reflection on imposter syndrome during periods of growth and leadership, and how mentorship, support and inclusive environments help women thrive in STEM.
