Where did we come from?

As a fresh company on the Plymouth digital scene you may be wondering where we came from? Why did we decide to start a business? And even more so - who actually are we?

Anyone familiar with the digital scene within Plymouth may be familiar with the i-DAT research group based within The University of Plymouth (if not, find out more here http://i-dat.org/about/). Stemming from this research group is the course “Digital Art & Technology” (now Digital Media Design) in which we study with a wide array of “playful” and “experimental” technologies such as arduino and wearable technologies, raspberry pi’s, hacking, immersive vision or dome technology, data visualisation (and other creative ways of using data) and also web design, app development, graphic design and film/sound. Technically for the three of us who founded Crumb this is where it all began.

However, more specifically where we really began was on a module based around Smart City technology and creative use of open source data. For our coursework on this module Myself (Rupert), Dan, Chris and another fellow student at the time, Matt French, created a great concept and prototype for an app called BlitzSight. We managed to get hold of scans of the Plymouth Bomb Book from WW2, which mark the locations of all the bombs that were dropped on Plymouth during the Blitz. Our technical director Chris created a genius way of turning these into a digital data set, something that doesn’t exist anywhere and was completely unique. We used this unique data set to make an educational mobile app allowing users to view where bombs were dropped around the city, what kind of bombs they were, the names and ages of the victims of each bomb, information on nearby landmarks and even view the bombs right down to each individual day they were dropped and furthermore allowed the user to view the bombs in augmented reality through the use of their phones camera. Following the presentation of this app, our lecturers Gianni Corino and John Matthias put us in touch with two members of the city council and we managed to get a spot in “The Box on Tour” exhibition showcasing our app in the run up to the opening of The Box museum in 2020.

As a result of this major success, we were approached by Dawn Melville and Mike Phillips of i-DAT who suggested we take part in the Summer Studio where the university finds clients and matches them up with the appropriate students to brainstorm unique solutions to their problems and then carry out the work. Myself (Rupert), Dan and Chris assessed each of our skill sets and realised that we were a perfect balanced trio to carry out some amazing work when working as a three and from this, Crumb Solutions was born.
