Bournemouth University Peer Assisted Learning

Bournemouth University Peer Assisted Learning Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a scheme that fosters cross-year support between students on the same course. What is a PAL Session?

PAL encourages students to support each other and to learn cooperatively under the guidance of trained students, called PAL Leaders, from the year above. Your PAL Leaders have just survived their first year and were in the same shoes as you this time last year. After training, PAL Leaders will facilitate regular study support sessions for groups of first year students. PAL sessions are planned, st

ructured, and friendly. PAL Leaders do not teach – they facilitate discussion/share experiences. The emphasis is on everyone working cooperatively to develop their understanding. Content for PAL sessions is based on existing course materials - handouts, notes, textbooks and set reading. Leaders are here to focus on what you as a seminar group would like to cover.

📣NEW STAFF MEMBER ALERT! 📣

This week we welcomed our new PAL Placement Student, Jen, to the Central PAL Team! She'll be working with our current PAL Placement Student Emma over the next 4 weeks as she learns the ropes.

"Hi! I’m Jen and I’m the PAL Placement Student for 2023-2024. I study Marketing Communications with Digital Media at BU. I was a PAL Leader in Second Year and enjoyed supporting and assisting the first years in their transition to everything University life has to offer.
This role inspired me to continue with the PAL scheme as being a PAL leader gave me an understanding of what it means to be leading and speaking to a group confidently; being a Placement student for this programme gives me the opportunity to see how everything works behind the scenes. Outside of University I love going to the gym with my friends and also love watching movies and spending time with my friends and family."

This also means that we'll be saying goodbye to Emma Lucas Vieira at the end of the month as she returns to study her final year of Business and Management at BU!

We've been at the Service Excellence Conference today! Here's our very own Emma putting together a food bag for the Community kitchen!

Located on the second floor in SUBU, the Community Kitchen is open to all students and staff at BU to use throughout the year. Its main purpose is to help those who are facing difficulties during the cost of living crisis and are unable to afford daily essentials such as food or sanitary products. It also is a great place to go and meet people, heat up food, look through receipe books and eat as a group.

All About Us - Bournemouth University’s PAL Scheme

The PAL scheme has operated at Bournemouth University since 2001. Originally we obtained funding of £150,000 from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) between 2001-2004 under Phase 3 of the Fund for Development of Teaching and Learning (FDTL3).

The aims of the Peer Assisted Learning Project were to promote awareness, enhance understanding, and encourage effective implementation of Peer Assisted Learning as a scheme which fosters cross year support for students. Furthermore, we aimed to produce materials that would support a workable, systematic, high quality, transferable and sustainable scheme.

When we started PAL we drew upon many of the principles and ideas associated with the North American Supplemental Instruction (SI) Model that had originally been developed at the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) in the 1970's to combat the problem of high drop-out rates in certain courses. UMKC today supports The International Center for Supplemental Instruction.

Today, we are proud to be one of the largest Peer Assisted Learning Schemes in the UK, operating across all faculties and embedded within every programme at Bournemouth University. We have a centralised PAL Team, consisting of the Peer Learning Officer and PAL Intern, that manage the day to day operation of the PAL Scheme and provide advice and support to the PAL Leaders along with designated academics in every programme.
