(note this review contains spoilers) There has been a lot of carping by reviewers about alleged historical inaccuracies in Ridley Scott’s latest film Napoleon with one writer, Simon Scarrow, claiming it was ‘the worst film’ he had seen in the last few years and that it had left him ‘gasping ...

Last semester Level 6 BU Politics students on the History and Political Struggle through Film unit took part in the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Outreach Programme where we were able to hear a presentation from, and talk to, a Holocaust survivor guest speaker. BU Politics Society is now engaged in a new opportunity which is open to universities across England in April and May called the Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project.

This 4 part project only costs £59 per person and includes educational seminars and a one day visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Museum in Poland. For more information and eligibility criteria, and to sign up please click on the link at the end of this post.

The project is open to, amongst others, all 'leaders and members of student political societies' (as a Politics/Politics and Economics/Law student you are by default a member of BU's Politics Society).

The Lessons from Auschwitz project has four mandatory components in April and May and can be found below:

Lessons from Auschwitz Universities - South

Session 1 (online):

Session 2 (in-person - London Stansted):

Visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum:
Wednesday 3rd May, 2023
Departing Stansted Airport

Final Session (online)
Wednesday 10th May, 2023 - 5-7pm

One Politics student has already applied. It would be great to have a group going that could report back at a future date on their experience.

More information about the project from the Holocaust Educational Trust

The Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project is an educational initiative delivered by the Holocaust Educational Trust in partnership with the Union of Jewish students, with support from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.

In an increasingly fragile political climate, antisemitism, intolerance and prejudice are on the rise. The Lessons from Auschwitz Universities Project aims to bring together student and campus leaders from across university campuses in England. Through education about the Holocaust and anti-racism work together we can combat antisemitism and promote community cohesion. Our goal is to reinforce the common endeavour of students and campus staff of all faiths (and none) to create safe, inclusive and cohesive communities on campus and beyond and equip them with the tools needed to tackle antisemitism, racism and intolerance wherever it is found.

This important campaign on our doorstep is one BU students and staff may want to find out more about and support. One of the last few wild, beautiful, peaceful spaces in town with huge biodiversity (all at risk from proposed private healthcare development) - just 10 minutes cycle ride or 30 minutes walk from campus https://www.facebook.com/groups/458302160575

Nils Melzer, Professor of International Law at the University of Glasgow, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Human Rights Chair at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian says Julian Assange is a political prisoner who has not receved a fair trial.

Prof Melzer is ringing the alarm which is heard clearly in Geneva but which has been silenced with our media's help in London. Yet it is in South East London where Assange is held in Belmarsh - a Maximum Security prison for dangerous criminals and terrorists - where Melzer argues Assange has been psychologically tortured. The results of this torture are plain to see in Assange's weight loss, mental deterioration and stroke and it is likely he will die in a British or US jail unless public pressure for his release builds.

You are unlikely to hear about that campaign in the British mainstream media - yet the future of journalism, publishing, whistleblowing (from Collateral Damage to last Christmas's No 10 Mincepiegate) is at stake. We must talk about this case because the future of our freedom to speak and know about the secrets corporations, the military and our governments want to hide from us depends on it.

Posted less than a week ago on DORSET EYE yet Politics student Charlie Blake's article on 'Is Brexit a Failure?' has already been read an amazing 3,300 times. 100 would be usual, so it tells you what people are Googling! Shortages and supply chain issues may just be the beginning of problems that have come from Conservative Brexit policy. Amidst fuel shortages, rising gas prices and increasingly bare shelves, Boris Johnson refuses to blame Brexit for these issues. Early in October, Johnson claimed on the Andrew Marr...
