Earlier this week, a number of our students took part in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. In fact, just over one fifth of the entire college participated!

The UKMT Senior Maths Challenge is a national competition designed to test students’ mathematical reasoning, problem-solving skills and ability to think creatively through a series of challenging questions.

Maths is one of our most popular A Level subjects here at UTC Portsmouth, and this challenge gave students the opportunity to tackle some mathematical problems beyond their usual lessons.

Friday saw our first Sound Studio Showcase, a lunchtime session giving students involved in our Sound Studio Individual Development (ID) time the chance to perform the songs they have been working on.

It was great to see a busy lecture theatre, with students from Years 10 - 13 coming along to support their peers.

The showcase featured a range of genres, with performances from singers, guitarists, keyboard players and drummers. Over the past four weeks, students have been rehearsing their songs, developing their performance skills and collaborating with one another.

Individual Development time gives our students a unique opportunity to develop skills and explore interests beyond the core academic curriculum, with the freedom to choose the sessions that interest them most.

Sound Studio is something our students have been keen to develop since our summer showcase, so it is great to now be able to offer it as part of our ID programme.

Head over to our website, where you’ll be directed to our online application form through Applicaa.

Applications close at midday on Friday 13 November 2026.

Our Year 10 Open Evening is taking place tonight from 4:45pm–7:30pm. This event is for students looking to join us in Year 10 in September 2027.

Come and explore UTC Portsmouth, meet our staff and students, and find out more about our specialist STEM curriculum.

There will be three Principal/Vice Principal talks throughout the evening, giving you plenty of opportunity to hear more about life at UTC Portsmouth and ask questions.

Booking is essential and we now have very limited spaces remaining.

There are now only a few places remaining for Wednesday 30 September, 4.45pm–7.30pm, so if you’re considering UTC Portsmouth for Year 10 entry in 2027, now is a great time to come and see the college for yourself.

If you can’t make the evening, we also have a Saturday morning Open Event on 7 November, 9am–10.30am.

Both events are free to attend, but advance booking is required and places are limited.

During Forensic Science in Individual Development time, students have been investigating the case of the ‘Disappearing Diamond’.

Using a state-of-the-art scanning electron microscope, they’ve been examining evidence and getting hands-on experience with specialist scientific equipment.

Individual Development time gives students the opportunity to explore areas of STEM beyond their usual lessons and try something different.

Thank you to Hitachi and IRIS for making this equipment available to schools.

At UTC Portsmouth, education is about more than qualifications.

Development Time is built into every student’s timetable, giving them dedicated time to develop themselves academically, professionally and individually.

Students create their own bespoke programme, choosing the opportunities they want to focus on and developing our six STEM habits along the way: communication, resilience, teamwork, creative problem solving, curiosity and responsibility.

Our first Individual Development (ID) sessions of the term are now underway, with students getting involved in everything from forensic science and cosmetic chemistry to video game design, workshop skills, Adulting with Google Sheets and chess.

We believe preparing students for the working world and developing their employability skills is just as important as supporting them to achieve their qualifications.

Development Time is one of the ways we give our students the freedom to choose opportunities that interest them, build new skills and prepare for their future destinations.
