A couple of weeks ago, we had an incredible National Apprenticeship Week, packed with valuable insights, inspiring talks, and hands-on experiences. Our students learned so much from a fantastic lineup of Employer Partners, gaining a deeper understanding of the exciting apprenticeship opportunities available.

A huge thank you to everyone who made it such a success!

Here’s a short video capturing some of the highlights.

We’re celebrating the incredible achievements of our Year 13 student, Phoebe, who has just completed her year as a First Sea Lord Cadet, a prestigious role awarded to only 11 cadets from over 21,000 Navy Sea Cadets across the UK.

Reflecting on her remarkable year, Phoebe shared:

"It’s been a very busy and exciting year, and I’ve been honoured to attend prestigious events such as a D-Day 80 Memorial Unveiling, the Admiralty Carol Service, and multiple events commemorating the Battle of Trafalgar. As well as learning a lot, I’ve been able to work with the Royal Marines Band Service (which is hopefully my destination after A Levels, so a dream come true) and also I got to see all the behind the scenes at MOD Main Building.

I’ve also met some absolutely incredible people, such as the top of the Navy Board, Bear Grylls, Nicko McBrain (who I got to interview and he even signed my drumsticks!), Larry the cat, and of course the other First Sea Lord Cadets who made my year so special and will be friends for life."

We are immensely proud of Phoebe’s achievements and the experiences she has gained. Her dedication, passion, and ambition truly embody the spirit of UTC Portsmouth.

See below for some highlights from Phoebe’s journey 👇

Degree apprenticeships offer a fantastic route into industry, combining university study with real-world experience.

Oliver joined UTC Portsmouth in Year 12, studying A levels before securing a Degree Apprenticeship at Roke. He is now gaining hands-on experience in the industry while working towards his degree.

Oliver says: "For anyone that is considering an apprenticeship, it’s an amazing experience, and gives you a route into a workplace where you can learn and develop so much knowledge, skills that you can develop and use daily, and also gives you the experience of working in a job that you would likely not get from going through the university route."

A great example of how apprenticeships provide both academic progression and valuable workplace skills.

Apprenticeships provide an excellent pathway into industry, and UTC Portsmouth alumni are making the most of these opportunities.

Daksh is now a Degree Apprentice at Lockheed Martin, gaining workplace experience while continuing his studies.

Daksh says: “I would recommend apprenticeships to people as it’s a great way to jumpstart your career by having hands-on experience in real projects where you could make a big difference. Alongside this, you would be able to work towards a degree without having to worry about any student debt afterwards."

A great way to develop professionally while earning recognised qualifications.

Thinking about an apprenticeship? It is a great way to gain industry experience while working towards a qualification.

UTC Portsmouth alumnus Jack took this route and is now an Apprentice at Rolls-Royce plc.

Jack shares his experience: "Choose an apprenticeship in a subject area and role you are really interested in - you spend a lot of time doing it, make sure you enjoy it. Success comes much easier when you enjoy what you are doing. Experience in a part-time job is invaluable during the application process."

For students exploring their next steps, an apprenticeship could be the perfect fit.

Mae is now an Engineering Apprentice at Eaton Aerospace, applying her skills in a real-world setting while continuing to learn.

Mae says: "The thing that I enjoy the most is the ability to learn. Everyone at my workplace is extremely helpful in teaching and helping us understand projects that are going on. The projects are very interesting to learn about and gain information on. It is also very interesting watching parts go through different steps in the design process from initial designs to qualification."

Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to gain practical skills while studying towards a qualification. That is exactly why Mohin chose to become an Apprentice at Jaguar Land Rover.

Mohin says: "I chose an apprenticeship because I wanted to gain real-world experience in the engineering field while earning a qualification at the same time. It provides a great balance between practical learning and academic study, allowing me to apply what I learn in the classroom to my work."

After leaving UTC Portsmouth a couple of years ago, Caitlin secured an apprenticeship at Prodrive as a Junior Car Build Technician.

Apprenticeships provide the chance to gain real-world experience from day one.

After leaving UTC Portsmouth, Noor secured an apprenticeship at BAE Systems. Every day, she is developing industry-specific skills and contributing to exciting projects.

Noor says: "Doing an apprenticeship was the best choice for myself, as I believe that it gave me the opportunities that a university student would receive but in more depth and more hands-on experience, alongside meeting amazing people within the industry. I also get to go on board warships every day completing tasks, which many people cannot turn around and say they have done at the age of 20! My career and education path allowed me to identify who I am as an individual and built me up with the skills required to be the person I am today."

A fantastic example of how apprenticeships can fast-track careers in STEM and beyond.

A degree apprenticeship provides the best of both worlds - university study combined with real industry experience.

Aleksander is now a Degree Apprentice at Waterman Aspen, studying towards a degree while applying his learning in the workplace.

Aleksander says: "As a degree apprentice, I study at the university once a week and work the rest of the workdays. My university day is filled with lectures and independent study at the university’s library. During my working day, I go to my office, the Civic Offices, to support engineers at different stages of the project. I go to my office early morning and start working on CAD designs and reading through guidance and manuals to design safe and reliable road infrastructure."

An excellent way to gain qualifications and practical experience, without student debt.
