Last week, our academics delivered a perfectly timed Pet First Aid session for staff across 🐾

As part of Learn at Work Week, staff learned about common pet toxins, keeping pets safe during hot weather ☀️, and even practised pet CPR using the same teaching models our veterinary students use in training.

A huge thank you to our brilliant team for making it such a success! 👏

What is EMS?! 🤔

EMS means Extra Mural Studies - which basically means placements outside of teaching time. In first and second year, these placements are to be non-clinical (not in a veterinary practice) which means lots of time on farms, rescue centres, animal sanctuaries, zoos and much more!

Our students love getting out and about and grow in confidence with each and every placement. At this time of year there are lots of lambing opportunities, but there’s always a chance of seeing some more exotic animals too!

Discover more about the placement opportunities available to our students in the link in our bio 🔗

What Easter break?! 🐣 🐑

For our students in all years, a break in studies means time to complete som EMS placements, and at this time of year, that means a whole load of lambing!

The same goes for some of our staff who like to keep their skills renewed by staying in practice. Farm Animal Lecturer, Scott, is working at a farm vet in Snowdonia this week, dealing with lots of lambing, calving and c-sections!

We love seeing what our staff and students are up to when they’re not on our lovely campus!

How safe is eventing, and what can we do to make it safer? 🐎

Join Dr Heather Cameron-Whytock in a free webinar as she shares powerful insights from her latest research into risk in eventing, including:

🔹 Horse falls
🔹 Fatality risk
🔹 What speed across cross-country can tell us

Eventing will always carry risk, but how much of it is preventable? By understanding where and why things go wrong, we can make smarter, evidence-based decisions to protect both horses and riders.

🐴 Supporting equine welfare in the community

We recently joined forces with the British Equine Veterinary Association (), World Horse Welfare (), British Horse Society () and to deliver a subsidised veterinary clinic and North West Auctions 💙

Horses and ponies, many of whom would otherwise have limited access to veterinary care, received important treatments on the day, assisted by our second-year BVMS students who were gaining hands on experience in horse handling and clinical procedures.

Treatments included:

🐎 Castration
🦷 Dental Care
🐴 Foot Trimming
📚 Practical welfare and management advice for their owners.

Huge thank you to the charities involved and to our fantastic students and staff who made the day possible 👏

We were delighted to see His Majesty, King Charles III visited our partner college Myerscough College Agriculture and Farms during his recent visit to Lancashire.

His Majesty enjoyed a private tour of both Lee and Lodge Farms, where some of our students were studying farm animal handling. This was a very exciting visit for both staff and students and we continue to be both grateful and proud of the relationship we hold with Myerscough College and University Centre.

Human and Animal diagnostics research lead, Philip Houldsworth recently joined the Blackpool Zoo podcast ‘A Future That’s Wild’ to talk about a ground breaking new method to diagnose the deadly Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpes Virus (EEHV).

In this episode, the zoo’s elephant team put their questions to Phil, exploring how this innovative diagnostic approach could transform the way we detect and manage EEHV, helping to protect elephants both in zoos and conservation settings worldwide. 🧬🌍

It’s a powerful example of One Health, research, collaboration and real-world impact in action, and one we are proud to be part of.

We were so excited to have Dr Hannah Capon, founder of Canine Arthritis Management, join us for some guest teaching last week!

Hannah brought her own canine teaching assistants to help teach our third year BVMS students about osteoarthritis and chronic pain, something she has become an expert in since starting her business over 11 years ago.

Our students are so lucky to be tonight by veterinary industry professionals. Thank you Hannah for sharing your expertise - we look forward to welcoming you again! 👏
