Welcome to the UCLan Japanese Society In addition, last year we won society event of the year for our Japanese Bunkasai event.

UCLan Japanese Society is a place where people with an interest in Japanese Culture can meet, participate in cultural activities and be presented with an opportunity to learn and befriend others in a Cultural Exchange. We aim to provide a safe environment that is beneficial for both international and home students, making many memories to enrich their university experience here at UCLan. Last year

, the Japanese society was one of the largest societies across UCLan, with our noticeable foundations in language exchange, beneficial study aid for Japanese and many trips and events. This year, not only do we aim to expand in order to make possible for students to meet more people and take part in more activities, we also aim to achieve the Society of the Year award. We also aim to do Japan-based charity work as well, to raise awareness of the side of Japan that is not often mentioned in the UK. Overall we wish to create a society where people can be informed about one another’s culture, make friends and most importantly, have fun.

Hi everyone, due to unavoidable circumstances there has been another position open up on the committee. Luke will be stepping down as Chair. This means that in future any questions/emails should be directed towards me as I will be taking over Luke's role. However if you have any queries about the language exchanges please stay in touch with Luke - he will still be the point of call for them. Currently nominations for the committee are open the deadline is the 19th November and polls will open on the 22nd. (Ill send out reminders the week and day before they close) If you are interested in being part of the committee please nominate yourself the current vacant positions are Vice-chair and Social Secretary. Also if anyone has anything they want to contribute to Bunkasai (Japan day) please message me asap we are currently trying to organise as much of that as possible in the next coming weeks.

Hi Everybody, this week marks the start of a new year here at UCLAN, and with it a new committee, this year’s committee is as follows:

Chair: Luke Catlin-Groves
Vice-chair: Georgia-Lynn Roll
Treasurer: Theo Halliwell
Secretary: George Kirby
Social Secretary: Vacant (Apply at the October by-elections!)

Last year we were restricted to doing everything online, but with the new year we've been given the go-ahead to do events in person again. We have a lot of ideas for what we want to do this year, from Karaoke to Sushi making to a Film Festival and more. (Of course, including Japan Day)

Over the last year we’ve learned a lot about personal mental health and self-care, and as such we will be holding casual weekly socials for members to join and talk, play games together, do smaller trips together, and just generally de-stress after a hard week’s studying.

To keep the theme of good mental health we are also planning to launch a Discord server as a space for members to connect with one another and communicate, we’d love to see people joining voice channels and talking outside of events, making plans together, and generally making the most of our shared university life. It will also be a great place to keep up to date on all of our plans and events for this coming year so we hope you will all join.

Finally, after the success of last year we are continuing with the language exchange events, and already have several events planned for the next few months, more details on these will follow soon.

This year is very much a year of getting back on track for the society, our big events will be less frequent but we hope more memorable, and our small events will be more personal and focused on making us a stronger community.

I look forward to seeing everyone soon!

Luke Catlin-Groves
2021 JSOC Chair

What a year it has been! A lot of things have happened this year. The start of the online courses, online language exchange sessions... I hope you guys have made it through this ever-so difficult year. We have successfully finished the transition to the new committee members and now I'm not the Chair anymore! Thanks to all the support and thank you my team, the senseis, our members, uclan's societies and the people who participated in the online language exchange sessions, thank you very much! I hope all of you spend the rest of the summer well and I'll see you guys next year!
