🗨 BIENVENUE, WILLKOMMEN, مَرْحَبًا AND 欢迎 TO THE VERY FIRST READING FESTIVAL OF LANGUAGES!

From 2 November - 6 November, the University of Reading's Department of Languages & Cultures will host the inaugural festival with events held at venues across Reading town centre.

Come along and get involved in activities such as making paper animals, learning traditional Russian dances and picking up your first words in British Sign Language.

The week celebrates diversity of cultures and languages, including languages spoken in Reading with workshops, film screenings, a guided walk and a panel discussion open to everyone.

Join Dr Samrah Ahmed, clinical neuroscientist and lead of the Brain Health and Dementia Lab at the University of Reading, for this month's public lecture exploring the science of healthy ageing, dementia risk, and the latest research offering hope for the future.

☎️READING CALLING!☎️

Meet some of our brilliant students who'll be picking up the phone to Reading alumni and supporters over the coming weeks, as part of our Centenary Calling campaign.

For generations, the kindness and generosity of our University community has helped make Reading a place where people can learn, grow and find opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach.

Now, our student callers are hoping to inspire that same generosity for the
generations to come.

They'll be sharing their experiences of life at Reading, hearing from those who came before them, and talking about how donations can make a real difference.

That could mean helping a student afford university through our Beyond 100 Bursary, giving local schoolchildren more opportunities to learn outdoors in our new Learning Garden, or being there for students when they need support the most.

Our callers are pictured here in the Learning Garden, one of the projects they're hoping to help grow.

As an alum, this is a chance for you to hear from the next generation of Reading students, share a little of your own experience, and perhaps help make someone else's university journey possible.

Thank you to everyone who has supported Reading over the past 100 years, and to those helping create possibilities for the next.

A few words from our awesome alum, Amy Clarke, telling us what she loved most about recording the latest Reading Ahead podcast.

From the Class of '94, Amy graduated with a degree in Physical Geography, majoring in Climate and Soil Science – she's also a proud former resident of Wantage Hall!

Amy is the Co-Founder and Non-Executive Director of Tribe Capital and all-round champion of business that works for the common good and not just the bottom line.

In this episode, she sits down for a thought-provoking discussion with our Chancellor, Paul Lindley OBE, and Dean of Henley Business School South Africa, Jon Foster-Pedley, about how sustainable and ethical practices can - and should - become part of the way we do business, every day.

Throughout the month of October, the University of Reading comes together to celebrate Black History Month.

Whether you live locally or not, we invite you to join us for a series of sessions and events taking place throughout the month. Some are online and some are in-person, but all provide a space to reflect on the rich histories, cultures, achievements and contributions of Black communities in Reading and beyond.

The month's celebrations culminate in a Community Fete which will be held on the 31 October in central Reading. This flagship event will showcase the organisations, businesses and individuals who make a positive difference across our town.
