Our free online course, Anti-racist Teaching in Schools, is designed to help educators explore how racism and bias can show up in education — from classroom practice and curriculum design to wider school culture.

You’ll explore practical examples, reflect on your own setting and develop strategies for recognising and challenging bias, having constructive conversations about race and creating more inclusive learning environments.

Led by Professor Suzy Tutchell from the Institute of Education at the University of Reading, the course brings together research-informed practice and real experiences from education settings.

You’ve achieved QTS. So… what’s next? 👀

If you’re already teaching and fancy taking your practice a little further, our PGCE (Reflective Practice) could be your next step.

Designed for primary and secondary teachers who hold QTS — or are working towards it — the course gives you space to step back from the day-to-day and ask:

What does the research say?
What could I do differently?
And what difference could that make in my classroom?

Through live online tutorials, individual support and pre-recorded learning, you’ll explore evidence-based approaches to teaching and complete an action research project focused on developing your own practice.

And there’s a little more to it: the credits you gain can contribute towards a Master’s in Education.

You’ve got QTS. Maybe it’s time to keep learning.

“But I’ve mostly taught in SEND…” 👀

If you’ve spent most of your teaching career in a special school, SEND or Alternative Provision setting, you might be wondering:

Can I really apply for the Assessment Only Route to QTS?

The answer is: you could.

Your experience in specialist settings can count — provided your role gives you opportunities to demonstrate the full range of Teachers’ Standards.

There is one important part of the journey: you’ll need a minimum of six weeks in a mainstream school setting, with at least three weeks completed before you apply.

So if QTS is something you’ve been thinking about, don’t count yourself out just because your experience looks a little different.

Your classroom may be different. Your route to QTS can be too.

Can storytelling help children engage more deeply with maths? 📖➕✨

That's the question explored by more than 70 teachers, teacher educators, curriculum specialists and policymakers in Thailand as they came together to learn about the Maths Through Stories approach, developed by our colleague Dr Natthapoj Vincent Trakulphadetkrai.

Hosted at Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and supported by contributions from UNESCO and OECD colleagues, the workshop explored how storytelling can help make mathematics more meaningful, engaging and inclusive for learners.

The event was also livestreamed, allowing hundreds more educators from across Thailand to join the conversation.

What happens when researchers from across the world come together to share ideas?

In April, the Institute of Education hosted a joint research seminar with colleagues from SCNU, bringing together a wide range of research interests and perspectives from across education.

The seminar featured presentations on topics including:
• Gen AI in Education
• Education and sustainability
• Maths through Stories
• Student mobility and teacher identity
• Assessment Only Teacher Education
• UK–China transnational higher education programmes

The event created space for meaningful discussion, knowledge exchange and international collaboration across research and practice.

Recently, our Head of School, Professor Sarah Marston recently welcomed Barry Smith from Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, to the Institute of Education to discuss shared interests around sustainability, skills, innovation and strengthening connections between universities, businesses and communities.
