The Institute of Education (IoE) at the University of Reading is constantly striving for excellence, as reflected in our position in the UK league tables. We're looking for local primary schools to partner with us!

The University of Reading's Institute of Education is seeking additional mainstream primary schools with Key Stage 1 (KS1) provision to host our first-year BA Primary Education (QTS) students for their 2026–27 placements.

With placements starting on 19 November, we're particularly keen to hear from schools in Reading and the surrounding areas that are easily accessible by public transport.

Why partner with us?

-Support the development of future teachers and contribute to the teaching profession.
-Benefit from university tutor support and funded mentor training.
-Receive a £317 placement fee per student, in addition to the mentor training grant.
-Build a longer-term partnership with the University of Reading, with opportunities for wider professional collaboration.

We recognise the pressures schools face and have worked to streamline placement processes and reduce the workload involved for mentors.

Last week, we brought our PhD community together for our weekly social, alongside PhD induction.

A chance to step away from the research for a bit, catch up with familiar faces and meet people across the School.

What if what you learn at university stays with you long after graduation?

Meet Isabel, who graduated with a PGCE (Secondary) in Geography in 2022.

Today, she’s back at the Learning Garden with students from the school where she teaches — exploring climate activities and seeing her pupils get involved in things like their eco club.

And there’s something pretty special about that.

Isabel gets to take what she learned during her teacher training and bring it into her classroom today — connecting her own training with new ways for her students to learn about climate and sustainability.

A day full of stories, languages, books — and the people behind them.

Today, we brought together translators, publishers, librarians, educators, researchers, authors and children’s literature enthusiasts for The Languages of Children’s Books at the University of Reading.

From thoughtful panel conversations to the exhibition, and from French and Arabic graphic novels to hands-on translation workshops, the day was a celebration of all the ways language can shape the stories children discover — and how those stories can travel across languages and borders.

And, of course, the best part? The people. 💛

Here are a few faces and moments from today — the conversations, the books, the ideas and the people who made it happen.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, shared their work, asked questions, translated, exhibited, organised and helped bring the day to life.

The IoE in South Africa!

This week, Jo Anna Reed-Johnson is representing the Institute of Education at the UNISA Climate Change Education Symposium, Book Launch and Masters & Doctoral Student Workshop, taking place 21–22 September.

The event brings together educators and researchers to explore the role of teacher development in climate change action. 🌱

Jo Anna is also a contributor to the newly published Teacher Development for Climate Action: Climate Change Education, with a chapter exploring climate change education policy and pedagogy for teacher practice in England.

Starting university? Here’s something you might not hear enough: you don’t have to have it all figured out. 💛

Uni can be full of firsts — your first time living away from home, meeting new people, managing your own money, navigating a new city and getting to grips with independent study.

There’ll be exciting moments. New friends. New interests. Late-night chats. Places you’ve never been before. Memories you’ll talk about for years.

And there might also be days when you:
🏠 Miss home (and your family, friends or pets)
👥 Wonder if you’ll find your people
📚 Feel the pressure of keeping up with your studies
💷 Have to get to grips with budgeting
🧠 Feel a little overwhelmed by everything being new

All of that is part of finding your feet.

You don’t need to know exactly where you’re going yet. Give yourself time, ask for help when you need it and take it one day at a time.
