Last week, we had an amazing opportunity to meet with stakeholders from the Investigative Genetic Genealogy (IGG) community at the House of Lords for an event chaired by the Baroness Helena Kennedy KC.

A huge thank you to Cairenn and David, our partners from Ramapo College of New Jersey for traveling all the way from the US to share their expertise and insights on the importance of IGG. It was a thought-provoking discussion about how this tool could be implemented in the UK to support justice and human rights.

The momentum from this event is inspiring, and we look forward to building on these conversations with our colleagues at Ramapo College and Sheffield Hallam University.

Global scale of violence against women: An estimated 736 million women - almost one in three - have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both at least once in their life (30 per cent of women aged 15 and older). This figure does not include sexual harassment. Women who have experienced violence are more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety disorders, unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections and HIV, with long-lasting consequences.

The 16 Days of Activism is an opportunity to revitalize commitments, call for accountability and action from all decision-makers - including us! This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPfA) which was launched to mobilize action and investment to achieve gender equality, rights, and empowerment of all women and girls.
Join us in our commitment to end all forms of violence against women and girls.

**Equal is greater. Equal adds up. When actions deliver for women and girls, everyone benefits.**

Dr Albertson's presentation was requested to inform the research project teams approach and study design, entitled "Methodologies, Methods & Moments: Identifying key comparative potential by reflecting on a decade of research with the UK Armed Forces community".

The invitation to the open the conference was based on Katherine's co-authorship of an International edited collection - Military past, civilian present: International perspectives on veterans' transition from the Armed Forces.

Join us today, June 20th, at 6 PM at the Showroom Cinema (Paternoster Row, Sheffield City Centre, S1 2BX) for a special screening of ‘Life in Limbo’. Don't miss it!

In these collaborative films, members of the pioneering charity ‘Spark15’ share their inspirational stories of survival, finding belonging and creating a unique organisation which campaigns for change in Malta.

The films highlight how there are few safe, legal routes to reach Europe. And how, the thousands of people taking the perilous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe, can then find themselves in limbo for many years awaiting documents to be processed, caught in an apartheid-like system in which they don’t have equal employment and citizenship rights or status.

We were thrilled to host a fantastic event yesterday as part of International Women's Day celebration. The event was linked to the launch of the book "International Perspectives on Gender-Based Violence," edited by Dr Madhumita Pandey and published by Springer Nature.

This book showcases a strong collaboration between our staff from the Department of Law and Criminology and we are particularly proud of our Early Career Staff who have contributed to this important volume. Yesterday we had a chance to hear from Anna Lester, Charlotte Oliver and Dr Sarah Tatton.

"International Perspectives on Gender-Based Violence" examines the multifaceted nature of gender-based violence (GBV) and the many forms it takes; explores GBV and its implications on human rights, law, and policy; and highlights the significance of international debates around preventing GBV. Discover more about this pivotal work and secure your copy here: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-42867-8

Our event was chaired by Professor James Banks, Head of Research, Department of Law and Criminology, Sheffield Hallam University and we were honoured to have Professor Ann Stewart from the School of Law, University of Warwick, inaugurated the book, further elevating the significance of this occasion.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in commemorating this important milestone. Together, let's continue advocating for gender equality and working towards a world free from gender-based violence.
